VW Speed

I don't know if it's just a certain NY-based ballroom DJ, but lately the (Int'l Style) Viennese Waltzes played in competition have seemed to be on the slow side. I'm sure they're still legal tempo, but probably the slowest legal tempo. Any observations from those of you around the rest of the country/world?

I guess the legal range is 58-60 MPM. Playing them at 58 definitely takes the edge off, and I think it lets the dancers do more. Wish I'd seen this yesterday - I'd have asked Mr Innis about it!

I almost always play them at smooth tempo (54) at socials so everyone can enjoy :-)

I'm a fan of slower VW because we are a taller heavier couple. When they play a fast VW, we look like fluffy chickens racing. We also like to do bigger stretch, that fast VW does not allow. =)

I actually have a problem with VW songs that are slowed down, but I know the original-tempo version ("Hero" from the Spider-Man soundtrack, "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.) I have trouble slowing myself down! But I'm odd, I love VW and am very pouty and bitter it's not included in bronze-level scholarships and multi-dance at most events. My pro thinks I'm weird but finds this amusing.
