Wanting to Compete

Ok, so I've always wanted to compete ever since I saw strictly ballroom when I was like 8. I'm currently taking salsa lessons and loving them. I want to compete though! I know it’s only my 3rd month of doing salsa but I've been doing jazz for about 10 years so I'm not too bad at picking things up pretty fast. Any ideas about how to go about starting to compete?

First off, congrats on discovering salsa. Glad to hear you like it.

Not sure if salsa competition is going to be all that viable for you. It highly depends on your local scene, but most scenes that I know, the only competitions will be held at one of the local clubs, and tend to be more informal (i.e. crowd applause) than being judged by actual judges.

That being said, perhaps you could/should check with some of the local ballroom studios and see what they offer as far as competitions go?

since you are in Bay Area, maybe LA won't be too far away for you.

Salsa is... not competition oriented per se. It's more social dancing oriented, and has plenty of performance opportunities.

In the upper echelons of skill level, there are some prestigious competitions to be had. Look at the LA Salsa congress website (albert torres productions website) to see what's happening this year.

In a city like LA, I can expect some local competitions to happen in clubs, more in the style of informal Jack and Jill's. But there isn't much to expect at beginner/intermediate skill levels.

If competitions are your thing, why not take a peek at ballroom dancing ?
