Watch your new credit cards....

So my credit card (the only one I have) is expiring, and it's that time of year when the new one is sent to me.

The new one arrived today, and when I went to open the envelope I noticed it was already opened, as if someone had steamed it open. The envelope flap was kind of wrinkly, but nothing was torn, and the flap was wide open.

Someone could have very well opened it on purpose and copied down not only my name, address, and account number but also the security code on the back. The card isn't valid until I call in from my home phone and activate it, but once I do, anyone with those the two sets of numbers could use it to charge things!

So, I called up the card issuing company and told them what happened and asked them to change my account number and issue me a new card. They had no problem in doing this, and immediately closed out my old account. I'm posting here as a warning to people: if your new card arrives and the envelope looks funny (water damaged, wrinkly, torn, open) don't use the card -- call and get a new one!
