Hi everyone, I went to my first WCS dance last night - it was good. Before i get started I'll briefly introduce myself.

My name is Martin and I live in Portland, OR. I have been dancing salsa avidly for over five years now. When I first started salsa I wanted to learn WCS, and I always said - I'll learn WCS just as soon as I get a little better - I just need some more time with salsa :) so anyways, five years later I have finally picked up WCS.

I took four classes with Chris No Bones Jones at the Viscount dance studios here in Portland. And then I decided it was time to go out :)

I really enjoyed the night. Its a lot different from our ECS scene here. The ECS is much bigger, however, when you go to an ECS swing event you will see a lot more people - but there will only be a concentric group of dancers that know how to dance and that only dance with themselves. And the rest of the dancers barely know the basic step. I gave up on that scene after about three months.

But last night I went WCS dancing and just about everyone knew how to dance! It was great! I danced about nine songs. I only asked ladies for three songs - the other six songs ladies asked me. This is a pretty novel concept coming from the salsa world. Definately pretty cool.

So anyways, I had a really good time and I really look forward to going back again next week. And yes, I am going to continue taking classes with Chris Jones - he's a great instructor and very patient :)

Glad it went so well for you Martin, sounds like when I went to my first WCS dance. Very fun dance once you get it all down. Salsa is a different dance, but the experience probably helped with learning WCS right?

Glad that you had a good time T. Unfortunately the instructor in my area is good, but I'm not receptive to learning from her. Her way of teaching and my mind don't quite click...so I've got to figure out something.

Salsa is a different dance - however, it has helped me with WCS. The connection and tension is about the same. It has also helped me with my balance and frame. And it helps me remember moves - when we learn a new move I try and connect it to a salsa move and then just remember the differences between the salsa and WCS version - it has worked so far (as I get more advanced I am sure this will not hole true all of the time).

Viscount dance studios, I'll have to remember that if I'm ever in Portland.

Yeah, some moves I learned in Salsa also work in WCS.
