What are DJs doing wrong

That's a stretch. I heard a lot of Tanturi I don't particularly like but I prefer him over Pontier or Alex Krebs. Alex is a very interesting instructor, hell of a nice guy too, but seriously, would you put him in the tanda lineup?

Alex Krebs recorded some fun milongas, I play them occasionally. I don't have the Pontier orchestra in my working list but it's at least likely to be novel and interesting if someone else plays it since it is rarely played. Admittedly I have heard other DJs play Orquesta Francini-Pontier 3 times in the last two weeks but that's an anomaly.

The problem with Tanturi isn't that it's a bad orchestra, but there are not that many good songs, and they get overplayed.

Tracks for one tanda are sufficient, for example a few milongas from Alex Krebs.
But let's go through something like this realistically.

A quite attractive dance partner asks me to listen to Pontier/Sosa:



Okay, I understand, she asks me to create a tanda with that stuff and dance it with her.

And then I see on a report from my previous DJ set that I didn't play Tanturi.
So I'll listen to a typical track, Tanturi/Castillo:



Okay, that's how Tanturi sounds like, and I don't like Castillo's nasal voice anyway.

Ultimately I have to choose one or the other.
After the DJ set, the feedback came: "Great, there wasn't a single superfluous tanda!"

I played one vals-tanda by Romantica Milonguera, and one such by Sexteto Cristal.
And here around I don't hear "El irresistible" by D'Arienzo too often, so I started a tanda with that track.

Absolutely ok, just a matter of taste.

Now this was a milonga special, with a previous screening of the tango movie "Adios Buenos Aires" and candlelight. Actually a 50:50 mix with alternative music was planned, and that got changed to "traditional" purely for me as the DJ. But however, the participants stayed more like 50:50 - and 50% from the 50's and later was my compromise offer, the replacement drug, and it worked quite well.

I have a dance partner with whom I can dance Domingo Federico in a wonderfully springy way:



Unfortunately I missed her at that tanda, happens when the location is crowded. If there had been enough time, I would have sent Alfredo De Angelis into the race a few tandas later for us:



But so I danced the last tanda, Francisco Canaro, with her, that flow wasn't bad either:

That de Angelis recording is of an (US) American tango. If I really wanted to play an Argentinian cover of that song I'd go for Sassone though

Well, I had already played that a week before at another location. The motivation was similar: to offer the people who also like to dance to "To tango tis nefelis" & Co something that somewhat fits my preferences.
