The roughly 21 chief qualities you need to dance tango are.......
..fear and surprise....
balance...and
I"ll I need is balance. That's it. That's all I need.
And coordination. Balance and coordination, that's all I need.
And a partner. Balance, coordination, and a partner. That's it.
And musicality. That's all I need. Balance, coordination, a partner, and musicality. And wine. OK, not the wine.
And.... practice, practice, practice...
And...love for dance and music and patience.
and.. good teachers
And.... A good partner
and an almost fanatical devotion to Chicho.
an a pair of pretty red shoes...
and music......
and a good hug/abrazo
Pig-headed stubbornness. Or "determination"
Presence
Emotion and passion
Feistiness and surrender in women*
spontaneous

Yes there are, but the nagging tone, and the obvious desire to take over the world (the tango world, anyway) and to have everyone dancing to his tune is quite repugnant to me. It seems very common in the tango world, unfortunately.
For a dance that is supposed to belong to everyone, the tango community is strangely full of those with a controlling mindset.

ah, I'm reading Aleph Bravo Tango by Dyv Saraza; its fiction and darkly funny (perhaps uniintentionally) and recounts the foibles of the obssessive compulsive tango world

That's a quality one needs to learn tango. Is it also necessary to dance tango?
Compliance, definitely, delicacy, maybe, modesty, not if you've anything to show off, with chastity a distinct disadvantage!

IMHO, absolutely. In tango, you can't rush your partner, nor the dance. The execution takes equal amounts of care and time in order to make the dance happen.
