What goes on inside a dancer's mind?

During competitions, I always think about bright lights on the floor and how distracting they are. That’s what I remember after each comp - just a fast swirling of lights...

The only words in my brain are usually the counts, as background and markers for tricky spots. I find counting relaxing and grounding. Even today when I hear music of old routines, my brain remembers how I counted it.I guess the other part of my brain is expressing the music and relating to my partner and the audience physically.

Yes to most of the above. However, as a leader in social dance (Argentine tango, Lindy hop & Balboa), a good portion of my attention is focused on the dancers around me. Don't bump into them, don't lead my partner to bump into them, anticipate where the oblivious newbie is headed, and what kicking thing he/she might be preparing to do, etc. Think of driving a car in moderate traffic.
