Another workshop in town next month -- this one on Milonga/vals. Huh? What is vals? MadamSamba or bordertangoman, where are you?

Vals???

I believe this refers to Waltz. Some Argentine Tango music has a waltz tempo. So I'm pretty sure Vals is Waltz :kitty:

Generally refers to Tango danced 1 step/measure to waltz music, with the tempo up above Viennese - around 70 MPM.

Thats pretty much it: steps on 3rd - slow beat and lots of turning and movement but no ganchos as they don't really fit. its nice

Welcome to DF hereKittyKitty!! :D What sorts of dance are you into?

Hi Pygmalion, Hi Saggita, and thanks for the welcome. In response to your question Saggita, I do all of the ballroom dances. I'm not a competitor or anything. I just like to dance. I recently started taking adult Jazz classes because I've always wanted to. My parents had 9 kids  so there was no way I could take them as a kid. Ballroom dancing is easier for adults to pick up, so that was my starting point about 5 years ago. As far as my favorite ballroom dance goes.....I'll have to get back with you on that one. I look better doing smooth but I have more fun doing latin. Swing and salsa are always a blast, but waltz puts me to sleep!

So how does vals relate to waltz and to tango? Is it tango is 3/4 timing? Or is it waltz done in tango style? I'm confused.

The music timing is as for waltz but the steps are done on the major beat but throwing in the 'quick' steps now and again.

Does this clarify it for you Jenn?

A little. I guess I'll have to go to that vals workshop and see if my interpretation of what's being said here is correct.

Welcome to DF, HereKittyKitty and thanks for your great explanation.

The vals has been explained pretty well in the preceeding responses, Jenn...but it relates back to a brief explanation in this posting to the three types of AT, at least the ones I know of. There might be more!

One of the clearest explanation I've found of the vals is: "Vals is Argentine Tango's version of the Waltz. All tango steps and lead/follow technique are possible in this dance within the 1,2,3 rhythm of tango vals music,"
