What style of dance...

Yikes, it's only 14mpm. It has a Foxtrot sound to it, but Foxtrot runs from 28 to 30mpm.

On the other hand, if you go with the drums in the background, it's 59mpm, which is the correct tempo for International Viennese Waltz. ;)

Add another person who's curious about what blues dancing is...

Nightclub is probably the best bet I can think of. Odd song--so beautiful and so romantic, but doesn't lend itself easily to partner dancing. Kind of annoying that way.

Smooth Fox. Hellishly slow but delicious to play with. Follow the vocal.

I've sometimes wondered why, outside of the competition hall, we insist on dancing only to the recommended tempos. There are so many wonderful pieces like "At Last" that don't fit those guidelines but beg to be danced to. With the right partner - not afraid to play with movement - it can be most enjoyable.

I kind of hear you. I mean, I'm an AT nut, so I'll dance to anything and refuse to get hung up on little things like the tempo not being regulation speed.

But if it's 14mpm, instead of the regulation 28...that's a whole heckuva lot of tempo playing around.

Agree. In another thread, a few of us got all defiant of our definition of a measure or beat. If you find it, Chris Stratton will say that there are many rhythms..what one person will call a slow another might call a quick, etc. Sorry if I'm misrepresenting you Chris, but I think that's what you meant in short. Anyhow, in any length of time, there must be a beginning and an end with many degrees of said time in between. It's up to your interpretation as to how you'd like to divide it. Listen to the music..it might sound foxtrotty at times, it might sound like a bolero at others. The point is, it's not a this dance or a that dance, but it is all dances. Dance to the mood of the music...the highs, the lows, the quickness, and the silence. The melody and the vocals will tell you what to do. I've seen a couple do waltz to a 4/4 time song..yes technically it was wrong, but musically it was beautiful!

On that note...after seeing some of the world's best dance for some judges stuck on technicalities and absolutes, I've decided that in ballroom competitions...THE TALENT AND CREATIVITY OF THE DANCERS IS NOT ALLOWED TO EXCEED THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE JUDGES! If a judge cannot understand it, they will not mark it, but that doesn't mean that what the dancers are doing is wrong. Sometimes....just sometimes, the dancing is so incredible that the judges don't understand what they're seeing :) I mean who are the judges, but competitors of yesterday in most cases. I don't mean disrespect to judges. I'm just stating a fact that I ratified myself ;) btw I'm not referring to my dancing...even I don't understand it most of the time lol. IMO If it's open, then open it should be!!!

BOT Make it a Foxero or a Tangaltzumba or a Quienese Samcha, but make it what you like :)

Blues is a nightclub style of dance that's similar to west coast but more improvisational. One could consider the appearance to be the illegitimate lovechild of west coast swing and Argentine tango (that's it's appearance, not it's legacy).

There are a lot of good examples here.

Okay, my YouTube link didn't work. Let's try that again:

I know. Kinda boggles the mind, doesn't it. Actually, I have danced to "At Last" and remember it as a particularly exciting and uplifting experience. Most of the others in the ballroom sat down a third of the way through it, however. Sad.
