Does anyone on this forum dance socially to music they don't like? I am on a member of a different dance forum and for the first time in my life I learned that there are people dancing to music they don't like. It is pure craziness to me. Obviously if you are a professional dancer there are times you will not like the music but to choose to dance to music you don't like/feel is beyond me.

Real nice. I am also a ballroom dancer among others...Don't think it is necessary to be rude.

I will dance socially to music I don't like under a few conditions. For reference I started with salsa and love it but now also do basically everything except Lindy hop competitive ballroom west coast hustle even country. I'll dance to a song I don't like if: my wife likes it and wants to dance. If another woman asks me to dance if the floor is more empty and allows me to lead more advanced figures and last if the song has a unique rythym structure I want to try to play with

I can understand those reasons and I will do that also if forced ;)...but I guess I am really picky with my music..I also have a musical background as well as dance so in "salsa" where the music is so important it was very alien for me to hear that someone was dancing it and didn't like the music! Also going night after night class after class for years not enjoying the music just sounded crazy to me...caught hell for it on the other page thread....got kicked out over here with the "salsa people" :p
 
I wasn't being rude. You were invited earlier to repost in a more appropriate forum where you will get the responses you are looking for. Which you chose not to do. Then you continued to complain that people were misinterpreting your thread because you wanted it to be based on SALSA.

I am not kicking you out of ballroom discussions, I am redirecting your thread to an audience that can relate to your question. You will be much happier with the responses you will get here.

Other people kept replying that is the only reason I was still engaging in the conversation, the whole thing made me feel unwelcome. From the 4th post I explained what it was about and people posted for 5 pages after that...not my fault. And sorry I do not know you but I did find it rude. Don't want to argue about this any longer. Thanks for redirecting me to where I belong.

In general the salsa wcs and Argentine tango communities have a propensity to being very music selective. Or music snobs depending on your position. Once I started doing ballroom where you compete to songs with the correct rythym structure but not of your choosing you see music like bro in the matrix sees the world as ones and zeros. Also I'm an advanced leader so I'm in demand and don't want to not dance with an eager follower if the music is less than desirable I'm biased in that as a white guy I've gone into unfamiliar salsa clubs and peeps will say no until they see me dance. So I dislike any part of partner dancing that smacks of snobbery.

I am guilty of the white guy thing :( My scene is almost latin so when I see a white guy I usually see if he can dance first(though I would not say no)... I danced ballroom but did not compete...I did it for the training. Completion is a very different animal than social dancing, as you know...So yeah there are exceptions regarding music but generally I don't dance to music I don't like. I want to get goose bumps on the dance floor.
I have a extensive salsa collection(also dj) and there are times where I will listen to one song for days...Have been that way my whole life, drives people crazy but my ear is finely tuned;) With ballroom comps do you know a majority of the songs?
 
After a while if you collect the music you will know a lot of songs. I also djed in a club in the past and love to break music down in my head. The wcs community are the kings and queens of knowing music so that every nuance can be addressed. Love that as a leader to hit the breaks perfectly. The look in my partners eyes is priceless

It is just the best...One of the reasons I love practicing sola is that I can hit every break I want! Not many leads in salsa know the music that well but when they do its really Hot!!! Great feeling, hitting breaks together..being in sync with each other and the music...
