What to choose please some advice

Hi

i am new to dancing, I want to start a couple of dance classes but am having trouble on choosing. I want to be able to dance like jessica alba in honey or like the girl in step up. I also want to improve my flexibility. So was thinking would doing a ballet class with something like a street dance class be a good choice for what I want? I was also thinking of yoga for the flexibility as would like to able to do the splits (don't ask just a lifelong ambition lol).

This forum is mostly about partner dancing. We do have a sister site that is more geared to solo dancing (i.e. ballet, modern, hip hop etc.) - I believe the url is danceforums.net

I have to admit I've never seen jessica alba in honey nor the step up movies so I can't be sure what type of dancing they contain, but I'm guessing it's probably not partner dancing?

But as to general dance questions about flexibility, yes yoga is a good way to improve your flexibility. And ballet is a very good foundation for body awareness, balance, flexibility, strength and line. I have found it to be invaluable in all my dancing.
 
The movies in question (esp step up) does have partner dancing, but more hip hop, with some pas de deux in first step up. Ballet and a hip hop or street dance class would definitely be place to start on that. As well as visiting our sister site, as lg indicated. And welcome to DF!

I've seen Step Up and the two main dance forms in there were ballet and hip-hop, so those would be your choices, it seems to me. Ballet dancers usually learn stretches which include splits. Here is and here is detailed information and utube has various videos of ballet stretches. Yoga class would improve flexibility, but maybe or maybe not for specifically those dance moves.
