I think everyone has given good input. I will say, that two friends of mine, male pros, aren't always able to help their students to get up for their heats, etc, because of way how busy they are at our regionals. Maybe 1400 entries, and they each have 200+/pc, meaning they're on the floor 85%+ of the time. When you're on the floor for 30 entries in a row, it's hard to run off and grab a student. Luckily, we're a close region, and most students are actually from same exact studio, so the students help each other keep track of heats, and the floor captain is great on getting us up there a few heats ahead of time (for these students whose teachers on the floor continuously).
Luckily, that doesn't apply to me, being a male, and not one of their students.
I'm biased, but my pro is perfect, I think.

I've only done one competition so far, but she was great. Spent several of pre-studio lessons not just getting the dance ready, but practicing proper way to get on floor, how to choose place on floor to make sure we were well placed for judges, all that. Weekend week before the comp, had a bit of a breakdown, parents talked me through it, but I let pro know that monday. She reprimanded me a bit for not coming to her first, but beyond that, thought that was it. Instead the rest of that final week, and at the comp, she was extra attentive, made sure I wasn't getting upset again, having any issues. Had me get there early so we could run through all the dances again, check out the floor, figure out where cameras and judges were. Throughout day, made sure I was ready well ahead of time (esp since I was starting right off in heat ten or so), made sure I had some food and drank enough water, etc etc etc.
Course, that all being said, some of us male students are gentleman, and may not have maternal instincts, but still have chivalry. I tend to offer pro (and other women there with our studio) my jacket, as our comps are always overly cooled, at least for the viewers, I'll offer to get them drinks, e tc. So it may not be maternal instinct, but some of us guys out there are watching out too.
