What will everyone think?

Thank you for this thread Wannabe it is so encouraging. Tonite I was feeling like perhaps I should not compete next weekend, because I just don't have that Latin dancer body. But after reading the encouragement, I think I am going to muster enough courage to go thru it, besides I have about 25 people paying $25.00 each to see me dance.

I am going to give it my best as I emote my Rumba, kick high and spin fast with my Jive and Staccato that Cha cha cha to the best of my ability, but most of all---have the time of my life.

Why do I dance, why do I compete? Because If I didn't I would not be living. I choose not to merely exist.

Now knock 'em dead!!!!!
Hi nc! Absolutely go for it!! I'm sure you are fantastic and nothing should get in your way of showing everyone how hard you've been working. I've recently learned there are many more bigger ladies that do comps and showcases than I ever thought. This forum has helped me realize that. And if most people out there feel the way the people on DF do, then my weight is of little matter compared to enjoying myself. I'm glad this post has encouraged you to compete. You and many others on here have encouraged ne as well. So thank you. And best of luck at your comp. Fill me in on how you did when you get back. I'd love to hear...

It does not matter what they think, because I found out today, it isn't about the costume or your size, it is about your love of the dance. When you love what you do, you show it, you perfect it (or at least make effort to be better today than you were yesterday).

I almost forfeited today because my costume was not finished and had to scramble to find a costume to use today, but thanks to my Instructor, who told me it was O.K., not to worry and that I was going to win with my amazing dancing.

I won first place International Latin Scholarship B today at IGB. Unbelievable!!!!

Thank you for the encouragement; Latingal, Wannabe and Cani!!!

Aw, nc!!! Reading this just brought tears to my eyes!!! Way to go! Big Congrats!!!!:notworth::bouncy::rocker::banana::cheers:

Thank you Cani and Fascination! @Latingal, Yes, I was the one with my mouth open as I accept my prize (I really should carry an attitude like I am going to win anyway so---so I am prepared just in case and look good in pictures). My cheering squad, well my first dances I was doing so bad, we wished they would stop bringing the judges attention to us. It was my "Hail Mary" pass that needed to win the game or as Daniele admonished "Dance your ---- off" and I did! I had the time of my life.

Sorry to be late with my congrats nc, but I just now got to check out the forums again. OMG!! That is awesome!! Congratulations. I know it's well-deserved. You will have to post a pic (if you want). Sometimes I'm too shy to post pics :) You have inspired me too! I'm gonna shimmy my way to a fantastic Salsa showcase and my pro just asked me if I wanted to compete in a small local comp and you know what?? I think I'm gonna do it thanks to you and everyone else on DF. Cuz life's too short and why not right? Congrats again. I'm proud of you for dancing...

Always give the best you've got that day and no matter what your placement, you win. I'm glad that you had such a wonderful experience nc, you and your teacher were fun to watch.

Now, like all good teachers would say, celebrate and then it's back to work! *grin*

Thank you 3wishes and Tangorocks!

Update on the Salsa progress...

We finished all of the choreography in my lesson yesterday. I like it. It's a fun, energetic dance and I think I will enjoy doing it. I'm finding a little trouble with emoting (sp?) during the dance. I feel like I have all of the steps down but that I'm going through the motions, moving my feet on time, etc., but I'm not emotionally connected to the dance. I want to be, I just don't really know how. I want the people on the back row to feel this dance too. Is it facial expressions, bigger motions, more smiling, more eye contact with my pro? What will help me with that?

Also, has anyone heard of a mambo step called Mambo Jambo? Apparently, we are changing one of the steps in my Salsa and putting this step in it's place. My pro says I know the step already but I don't remember learning it. We had to take out one part of the routine because there were like 5 rock step into turns all in a row and since my technique is not so great with knowing where and in which direction to spot, I literally felt ill after doing it. So pro said to just change to step. So we did. On the one hand I'm glad we changed it. On the other hand, I figure I'll have to learn where to spot eventually... But I kind of like the new step better anyway :)

First of all, Congratulation!

As for the emotional connection, or emoting, so to speak, I understand it could sometimes be disturbing. Actually I am wondering how much time to you have before the actual showcase? Normally, when I practice (though this is mostly for competition - but the same spirit), I have two mode. One is the drilling/technique mode, and the other is performing/competing mode.

Normally, when practicing, I focus on the technique (timing, foot placement, etc) - so that when competing/performing, I don't need to worry about it. At this point, I normally don't care about emotional connection - unless I am specifically practicing on it.

And when we do practice rounds/ and actual performing/competing - I just throw the technique out of the window and dance. As some of my friends say "what sticks, will stick; what does not, will not." In theory, your muscle should already memorize the techniques. And seriously, normally, the audiences do not know your routine, or the technique - if you mess up, do it as you mean it. Energy is the key, IMHO.
