What would you dance to this song?

A good friend of mine recently brought this song to a dance teacher with the intent of learning a simple routine for a wedding dance. His teacher told him that it had no beat and was danceable. Obviously they were disappointed, but I had to say that I thought it could be a rumba.

Any other opinions?

I certainly wouldn't have a beginner try to dance it, as definitely has portions where beat is hard to pick up, and somewhat hard throughout. I also count it at 45BPM, unless you split it, which puts you around 23, for a SLOW int rumba or even bolero.

I wouldn't have called it a complete loss for a wedding dance. I've dealt with worse before. I agree with using int. rumba steps, and I'm sure a simple routine could be whipped up for a wedding.

Most wedding goers wouldn't know the difference if you did waltz figures...

Thanks for the replies!

My advice to my friend was also to just learn a simple rumba routine, and dance it to the beat when it was there, and to just keep going when it wasn't. As you say, no one at a wedding is likely to know anyway and even simple steps to their own beat is cooler than just a traditional slow dance.

I would do a single-count foxtrot. (No slows, each step 1 count.)
I would do foxtrot as well. I have tried to move and it felt good. For the beginner, it it fairly comfortable speed. Rumba feels right as well. May they can do a combination Foxtrot / Rumba routine.

I agree with LauraB, Society Timing Foxtrot. Bronze American Foxtrot with each step 1 count. I've done this for quite a few of my wedding couples. I have never told a wedding couple "this song is not danceable", I will always find a way to put something together for their song. It's their wedding and their song not a competition.

agree but...that is what it makes me want to dance to it...and QS...at least step wise is relatively easy at a basic level

Agree, QS is has easier steps than foxtrot or rumba for the beginner

Feel wise, I feel like starting as a very slow foxtrot, moving to rumba or quickstep in the middle when the music changing the beat

Cajun Folk

Did anyone else kill 15 minutes looking through Cajun / Folk youtube videos to try to find someone dancing to similar music?

I looked for a slow One Step, no luck..

Definitely want to start slow no matter what you do to it.

I'm not feeling quickstep, though. It would fit the beat pattern, but it wouldn't fit with the words and the overall feel of the song. To me, the words give it more of a sentimental/romantic/reminiscing feel.
