Whats the difference?

There is a big latin festival in town this weekend and I'm looking at the programme trying to decide if I want to go to some of the workshops. At $25 a pop, it's rather expensive so not really sure if it will be worth it.

Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference between Cuban Rumba and normal ballroom box rumba? If there isn't a big difference I don't see the point in taking that workshop. Also there is a workshop on Zouk which intrigues me as I have never heard of it before. I'm sure someone here will know something about it.

Great festival I would love to be more involved, but it's so expensive I have to limit what I am going to participate in.

I want to do zouk. Search for zouk on df and you'll definitely find stuff. And cuban rumba is different from ballroom. I know that much, though I have never seen cuban rumba.

I heard of zouk from reading on DF, but don't know what it is. Never knew there was a such thing as Cuban Rumba, and now I'm intrigued.

Well ...... here Cuban Rumba is Ballroom Rumba.
Ive heard many studios and MCs at competitions announce the dance as "Cuban Rumba"
In Neville Boyd's (You would have heard of him d_f?) book on Ballroom Dancing Technique he also refers to it as Cuban Rumba.

As for Zouk....I think Ive read somewhere that its a form of Lambada?? Dont quote me on that because Im not 100% sure I read it right!

We have a Latin Festival happening here shortly as well, I was thinking of taking the Lambada and Salsa workshops..its been quite a while since I have danced a salsa!

Thanks for the replies guys, but I didn't end up going at all. Workshops were far too expensive. Considering I would only be taking one class of the chosen dance, and would have no-one to lead me so would probably never use any of these dances again, I just didn't see the point of paying out $25 per workshop.

Makes sense, I guess. 25 dollars for d_f to see other dfers fund I guess. :)

Cuban Rumba, basic step:

left foot forward on 2
right foot in place on 3
LF to the side and slightly bwd on 4&1
RF bwd on 2
LF in place on 3
RF to the side and slightly fwd on 4&1.

I don't know if this also refers to as ballroom rumba, but it is definitly not the box step of square rumba.

I'm no expert in this subject but as far as I have seen there is a big difference in Cuban Rumba and Ballroom Rumba. Perhaps they both come from the same origin but they look and feel different.

Have you seen Dirty Dancing II - Havanna Nights? There is a scene where they dance out in the street (Javier + some other guy). This is what I call Cuban Rumba. You also see some of it in the dance Chayenne do in Dance with me. His salsa is very influenced by Cuban rumba.

I have taken a few classes in Afrocuban dance and what I have been taught is more related to african dance than what you see in the ballrom contests. Last weekend I had a class in rumba with a Scotch teacher ...she meant the same style of dance that I do.

But I must confess that I don't know what these people mean by the words Cuban Rumba. Perhaps you can ask them?

There was a thread a while ago about different rumbas -- here it is:
What's the Deal with Club Rumba?

"Cuban Rumba" may refer to international ballroom rumba, cuban bolero or afro-cuban rumba... cuban bolero I think is sort of similar to ballroom rumba (but not to spanish bolero), whereas afro-cuban rumba is a completely different type of music/dance. Are you confused yet?

Oh, and there was also a thread on Yambu, a form of afro-cuban rumba:
Yambus -- Salsa and Sex
The article linked at the top of this thread gives you a nice insight into the afro-cuban roots of latin dances.

I agree with you cost is something to consider however every work shop I ever took was well worth the money I shelled out after all you just might learn a few new moves that make others ask Where did you pick up that move? If you can not learn a new move or an improvement to an existing move your not dancing keep learning!
