...that ended up possessing you?

For me, it was Dance Mania Vol. 1 by Tito Puente. That was back in 1991, before that I don't think I even knew what salsa was. That album spoke to me, changed my life, started me down this path that has consumed my soul...I was in college, got so sick of the crap on the radio, so I went to a record store looking for something, anything different and by the grace of the salsa gods I walked out with this record. What was your first?

Spanish Harlem Orchestra - Un Gran Dia En El Barrio! I must have had that in my car for several months and when I finally got the chance to see them live I was even more possessed!

Did they come to Denver?

No, I saw them at the LA Congress this past May :D

Manolito y Su Trabuca! Also purchased a Marc Anthony CD at the same time and one by Maraca! Still absolutely LOVE that music! Listening to Juan Luis Guerra and anything by DLG also remind me of my salsa beginnings! (Thanks to my buddies from Peru!) :D

Well, DJPatricio and youngsta showed great taste from the outset. I however, started out with "I Love Salsa", a compilation that hasn't seen the inside of a CD player for six months.
The first non-compilation album I got was "Saboreando - Salsa Dura en el Bronx" by Wayne Gorbea and Salsa Picante. The first track, "El Yoyo", is still one of my favourites.

salsa fresca...only one they sold at my local music store :)

Salsafresca - hits of the 90s for me too. I ordered from the internet to get the cheapest deal. :)

Actually the question was what's the first one you owned that possessed you, not which was the first you owned! :P

I know that the first merengue that I really liked was by Juan Luis Guerra.
I also do know that the first salsa that really moved me was by Orquesta Guayacan. I still love the song "El torrero"...ooh I have an idea..

lol Salsa Fresca here too! Overall I think it was a good first choice. It did get me hooked. Frankie Ruiz's Bailando (I think that's how you spell it) was pretty awesome.

So what salsa compilation would you all recommend to friends who want to learn about salsa? Right now I think I would probably steer them to one of the Salsa en la Calle Ocho CDs, maybe the 2004 one or the Platinum Edition.

I have, and like very much, Salsa Fresca too, but in general, I don't like compilations (other than my own). I don't think you get your money's worth. I say buy whole albums, first from groups you can't go wrong with, like Sonora Poncena, Gran Combo, Grupo Niche, etc, and then expand from there as you learn more.

I agree with the above! When I first started dancing latin dance, I bought some compilations but none of them are as good as the albums by each group/artist!
