generally speaking, regardless of being on 1 or on2 .. and taking it more interms of body movement, styling and particularities that in the whole make for a totally different expression..

according to what i've experienced, there's a notable difference when watching or dancing with dancers from the following major salsa centers..

Cuba
Puerto Rico
New york
Miami
Los Angeles

so.. if u had to choose only one, regardless of the person u are dancing with just for arguement sake, which of these style schools raises u to your best formwhen dancing? .. more so, in case it is different, which is your favorite to watch and get inspired by?
------------

For me.. on both accounts, i'm at my best dancing and inspired the more playful it gets.. so its Cuban-Afro

It's not the style. It's my partner! I've danced many a dance foreign to me to music that I don't know, and had a blast!! Yesterday night I was dancing with this Florida lady, Anna, to a salsa, and I spun her like a top. Now spins and turns are not my thing, but we developed this playful style, even going to extended shines. More shines then I usually do! But, wow! I felt able to express myself and could see that she was in 11th heaven doing the same. What more do you need?

 Don't those long arms of yours get knotted up when dancing cuban    :friend:

For me, it really doesn't matter what style I am dancing. It depends on who I am dancing with/the song we are dancing to that brings out the best in me.

I am not quite comfortable with On2 as yet, but, after a few "warmup dances" with Boriken, I was getting comfortable enough to play :D

Where ever there is an opportunity to play, I must play  so it is no good asking me just to choose one :|

Ricans and Cuban,
The ricans because the ladies, IMHO, are the sexiest looking when dancing a back and forth mambo style. The men tend to look strong, sexy, yet very masculine, and caterying to the women. The dance seems to be stired towards a sexiness that is absent in the other styles.

The cubans, when they break apart only, I love watching rumba and when they dance salsa, the trained ones at least, you get that feel of origin, flurtatiousness, seek and be sought... The strong origins that is close to nill in the other styles.

Those 2 styles stir my emotions, I am at my most delighted and top of my dancing when I can get emotionally charged, by either the music or my partner.

The sexiest style inspires me the most, to me it happens to be rican style.

Well first it comes from my partner, I have a few I can vibe off really well, but the style would have to be Cuban definitely. Dancing to El Boni, by Charanga Habernera 8).

NY and LA are nice to watch, if done properly. Not my style though.

Sure folks.. it depends on who u dance with first, naturally..
but i'm asking about style preference in general post that fact.. ie. given the individual effect is nullified or assumed constant .. u know .. theoritacally speaking :)

i'll edit the original post to that effect..

8) First, Rican. Now, Cuban.

Both are my favourites.........oh, the dancing is pretty great too  !

*just felt like being cheeky :P *

Depends on the music... some songs really work well with LA style, while others are made for Cuban style (I don't know much about other styles). I try to grab the right leader for each song whenever I can so I can match the dance to the song, which is when I think I do best. And, as Sagitta says, who you are dancing with makes a huge difference to my dance. I have favourite leaders -- both LA and Cuban -- I click with really well (I think), and they raise the level of my dance. The good news is, the favourites list is growing all the time :D.

As for watching for inspiration, I actually like the style I can't dance -- NY on2. There's something about it I can quite put my finger on...

I live far away from any sort of salsa mecca(or even a decent salsa club for that matter). I have taken basic classes given by instructors from
NY, Cuba, El Salvador, and Colombia.

I have long since forgotten what style I dance.
Non Colombians say I dance like Colombians, Colombians from the coast say I dance like Colombians from the middle of the country and vice-versa.

I find I dance best with anyone who has had some sort of dance class, including lead and follow.

I dance my worst with Latina's that have never taken a dance class. My NY style elements don't get followed and my cuban style still takes up too much space with them.

I am really at my best when the music is something that I can feel. Certain songs give me great energy.
