When to contact an organizer (post-comp music feedback)

Is the answer, "Never"?

It was a lovely comp, beautiful location, friendly people, mostly well organized, but the only negative item I'd like to bring up, because it is so egregious, is the music.

The entire American Rhythm session was danced to International music, which, of course, affected the tempi. We danced our pre-champ swing to Bryan Setzer's "Jump Jive and Wail," and I assure you, all 185 BMP were there as well. We have that round on video. All session long, every rumba was too slow, every bolero was way too slow, and the "swing" dang near killed us. We handled that particular swing well, and stayed on time, despite the challenge of dancing to 44+ BMP beyond what both USAD and NDCA have listed as appropriate tempi for swing (144 BMP... versus jive at 185).

(Note: we handled all tempi inedibly well; I'm really proud of our partnership and our connection that allowed us to do so - you guys may remember my post from October about the mental meltdown I/we had... We've come a long way in the past four months! So to up front address it - I would not say it affected our dancing, except that we had to shorten some body actions, slow down turns, etc. What choice did we have? Exactly.)

We were not the only couple to complain, in conversation, that the music seemed off, but when I asked those couples if they'd said anything to the organizer, they indicated no.

My partner is afraid if I email the organizer (no matter how politely, even mentioning the positive aspects) to comment on the music, we'll be branded "difficult," earn ourselves a negative reputation, etc.

If we had as many options as our northern dancing friends do, we'd just avoid this comp in the future. But we don't have many options; it's a virtual desert where we are. And we enjoyed everything else about the experience. But we were terribly disappointed in the music choices.

What to do? Thank you in advance.

Was it collegiate, ndca, or USA dance? I know a lot of collegiate organizers are self aware because they have dancers in those heats that complain about the dj and don't bring them back.that's what my school did.

For USA dance, I know my chapter is pretty good about trying to make the competition the best for everyone so feedback is encouraged by them.

I haven't competed ndca yet so I'm not sure.

You could ask a non-dancing friend or acquaintance to email the organizer (you'd provide the text for them to send). That leaves your name out of it, but gives them some important feedback. You probably wouldn't have a chance to get their response that way, though.

I've no idea if trying to stay anonymous is necessary, or if it is fine to just contact the organizer yourself. I guess it might depend on the individual involved, as some folks are very open to feedback, and others are much less so.

If an organizer does not take your honest critique as a sincere effort to improve their comp, then it indicates a comp that should be avoided.

In this internet age, it is hard to 'bury' reviews and issues. If videos exist of bad music situations, simply forward them to the organizer. They might simply need to inform the dj, or change the dj.

I'm quite surprised that non of the Judges ( or did they ?.. may be ) did not pass comment . I certainly would, at an appropriate time and place. .

But there again, I don't care for the choices of latin dance selections, as a general rule .

s2k you had wrong music tempos at a usa dance event ??? this must not have been an NQE they monitor the heck out of their tempos the music is usually better than ndca events from that standpoint

agree with BD most organizers want this feed back.

I just reread that and having to dance an open swing routine to Jive tempo must've been a nightmare. Hopefully you don't experience PTSD whenever you think about dancing swing. I know I can never hear Hit the Road Jack without shuddering because this one comp they played it at a faster than Jive tempo for at least 2 minutes.

USA dance has DanceSport delegates and a vp of Dancesport. Whenyou contact them, they can intercede for you, that is their job, to represent the dancers in competition. Let us know how it all works out...

Absolutely let the organizers know! They can get the message across to the DJ that they did something incorrectly so that they'll change it going forward or opt to go for a different DJ the next time around. As a DJ, I'd want the feedback myself. As a Rhythm dancer, the very thought of doing my open swing routine to jive tempo has me breaking out in a sweat.

Hopefully they will do what they were elected to do, which is represent the competitor. If they do not go to bat for you, then make sure that we all hear about it and we can vote in people who will do that. Their job is to intercede for the competitor.
