Why Do Dancers Smoke?

I don't know where is the problem. Everybody decides if he want to smoke or not. That discussion is very difficult becouse the both sides have there vision about this question. But you definitly cant judge some who want to be a dancer and who smoke. Its there decision.

One can judge *behavior* (such as "smoking" or "dancing"), rather than *people* (such as "smokers" or "dancers").

This is a good piece. It will surely help to know each and every small detail about the smoking consequences on dancers and their health. Smoking is really a bad habit, and certainly not good for dancers. Dancers should avoid smoking as it affects your body and health.

Hi ! I'm Trumpets:)
My partner is a smoker too..
And he slowly stopped it ..
yes! it's very hard for him but atleast it is for his health too:)
Encouragement is a good thing to do just to be believe in yourself that you can do it :)

Godbless :)

I think some women dancers smoke because they find it sexy. I doubt no one of you have ever heard or thought a smoking woman looked sexy...

It has been almost twenty years since Bija's call. Do you think something has changed? And if so, why has something changed? Is there more insight, more education, less advertising or role models, or is there more restrictions and public pressure?

I don't think something has noticeably changed during this timespan. Including ballroom world. I just think that not all reasons have been covered answering "Why dancers smoke?". So I have supposed one more reason: smoking as a social act - trying to look sexy. There's no doubt ballroom dance is sexy itself - so why wouldn't some dancer take a chance to add extra points to own sexuality?
I want to notice it's not me who considers smoking sexy, but I know many do.

..smoking as a social act...
I don't think so.

I am at home in the tango scene. The women there are exposed to a completely different pressure to conform: they want to be seen with the rolled-up yoga mat on their back, they eat vegan and want to look like gazelles.

The few smokers I know don't smoke in public. They steal away in embarrassment. If I ask someone to dance, they immediately apologize because they could smell of tar. (Tango is danced cheek to cheek).

Women smoking for social reasons may have happened in the last century. Today, clearly the addictive character predominates.

Happy to hear that, actually. You are from Western Europe or USA, right? :) I'm from the country which seems to be far behind in such questions. For instance, I've been to USA a couple of years ago and noticed it was so rarely to see someone smoking. I was suprised.

Yes - unfortunately here smoking is still considered as "cool" sometimes. There are ones who preach a healthy lifestyle (food, physical activity, etc.). But many girls - wishing to look sexy, independent, fashionable, mature - do smoke... It's especially weird when a girl has intensive physicial activity (used to see a couple of fit tennis player girls making a break and smoking outside the court).
