Why I looked worse in the video than in the mirror?

Hi ,

I find it difficult to watch myself dancing in the video. But when I practice, I like to watch myself in the mirror. Do you feel the same way like me?

Heh, I've spent a month and a half now avoiding watching video of my last competition. And I was supposed to b ring that tape into studio last week at absolute latest for new teacher to watch. She's on her way to south america now, and I STILL haven't watched that video to take my own notes before I leave it at studio for her. :) I watched it once with foermer buddy teacher as part of a lesson, that's it. She took notes, i didn't. ;)

Depends on who is doing the video - if it's reputable vendor like Front row or my dad, they do good job. Still I'm not satisfying with myself here and there regarding technical errors. Video is a tool for us to correct mistakes and seeking improvements.

Also found out for comps with 2nd floor balcony, videotaping from 2nd floor to dance floor makes the dancers look better. Not sure why, maybe more distance to the objects, so any small mistakes do not appear so obvious.

Hi hanqiaorui, I have the same problem with watching my tapes/dvds. I do not believe that I can be objective about my own dancing when faced with a recording to study. So I look at the tape to identify things to improve, but don't use it as an overall gauge of where my dancing is. Still it's a painful process.

video doesn't capture it all...it has issues with conveying movement becuase it doesn't often get a wide enough shot...it also has distortion and depth issues, so I try to bear that in mind...having said that, i approach my videos now like I approach going to the dentist, if you don't go and get it taken care of, it will only get worse...nothing can motivate me faster to stop a bad mannerism than to see how utterly moronic it looks on tape...

Just wish pro would stop looking at mirrors when we're dancing, always ends up with me getting correcteed about something. ;)

I don't think there's anyone on the planet who has chalked up more time gazing at my rear than my pro using those mirrors. Considering the...em...corrective comments...that have consequently emerged, am glad I don't have a complex about it. ;)
