Wisdom teeth

A odd question for the group, does anyone here have all of their wisdom teeth? I went to the dentist for the first time in...ahh...*ahem* a while yesterday and the x-rays revealed that my four wisdom teeth are doing just fine.

My dentist recommended to have them taken out since they tend to be hard to clean and therefore easy to get cavities...and I thought, ah no way. But as I started to think about it...it will make brushing a lot easier...but I know it costs major $$$ to have them removed, especially having 4 in my case.

Thoughts? I have to admit that having all 32 teeth is kind of cool for some reason... :D

i had all mine...until about 2 months ago!
one of them was growing out sideways and pushing all my teeth forward making them crooked.

so they took out one, and the one next to it because it was impacted by the wisdom...funny the words "wisdom teeth"...

youre lucky they dont bother you. i would leave well enough alone. it does cost $$!!

Interesting jenn...how long did you have them? Mine started to grow a long time ago and were fully in place when I was 20 (30 now)...so they've had 10 years to try and grow the wrong way...but so far have been fine.

The dental assitants were almost surprised to see that all four were in perfect alignment after so long. I think the dentist just said to take them out because that's the textbook thing to say!

About how much does it cost? I told my dentist I couldn't afford 1,000 bucks a tooth and she said "oh its not that much" but didnt' say the exact price. So its probably $999.99 I bet... :?

I think I will keep them...might improve my Salsa dancing or something...

 im not sure how long ive had them...at least 15 years, i suppose.
and it cost over $400 to take one out, thats after my insurance covered %40% of it. so, yeah, keep em!

lol @ improving the salsa dancing! :D

I have all four of mine! Not for too much longer, though, hopefully - they're all growing forward and they hurt . . . but being a flute major in school I can't get it done until spring break (aka post-spring recital) . . . grrr. Meanwhile, hooray for painkillers . . .

This is utter bull. Don't to it. The only reason to have them taken out is if they'll make you deaf as you get older. Very very few of us are prone to this problem. I have all 32. Developed a cavity in one wisdom tooth a few years ago, had it filled in half an hour just like any other tooth thankyouverymuch. Why would you leave deep scars inside your body without a good reason!?

Always remember that dentistry (and medicine for that matter!) is not a science. Dentists follow fashions. Took me years to find a dentist who thinks with his own head. Funny thing is he charges the same as all the quacks out there, ain't that sad.

On the other hand, if you decide to get rid of 'em you'll be able to spin so much faster...

I have all mine. The back ones on both sides, top and bottom, are perpendicular to my other teeth Apparently, my jaw wasn't big enough for everything to fit normally. So my dentist said the same thing. Pull 'em, because they're difficult to maintain.

So I got a new dentist, and I've been fine ever since. Yes. Wisdom teeth are hard to maintain, but heck! They're my teeth, and I'm keeping them.

Thanks for the tips everyone...I really dislike dentists and doctors...is it any wonder why it had been so long since I'd been to a dentist?

Well, my only real cavity wasn't a wisdom tooth...I just got lazy and stopped flossing is all...my own fault!

Years ago I had a problem with a tooth that came in slightly askew...and was told I'd have to undergo expensive oral surgery but I told them no way. Funny...that problem corrected itself over time and now there's no trace of it at all...

"Hey there baby, would you care to dance with me? I just had my wisdom teeth taken out and I can spin like a whirling dervish. Of course I still can't lead and I'll surely step on your toes...but since I'm cute that will more than make up for it!"

(for now I'll just stick with Pilates to improve my Salsa dancing...its already given me firmer abs and more rib cage movement!)

Hey! This is my area of (somewhat outdated) expertise! I haven't worked for a dentist in a few years (ok, 5) but here's my experience:

If you can maintain them, then there should be no problem with you keeping them. :)

My husband has a big mouth (in more ways than one, actually  ) and he has his 3rd molars - with room to spare. They are functional and in good alignment, there is plenty of room back there for a toothbrush and he'll probably have them until he dies. (Unless he suddenly stops brushing his teeth, and I've already warned him that I won't kiss him if he gets dentures.) His isn't the only mouth I've seen with fully-erupted, funtional, maintainable 3rd molars, there are other people out there with the room in their mouth for them. It is more common to see mouths tho, with not enough room for them.

As for me.... I am congenitally missing my 3rd molars! Score!!! Found that out in school when we were studying dental radiology, everyone called me lucky! (I don't know why my dentist growing up never filled me in on that one, perhaps he told my mom and they just never bothered to share that tidbit with me?)

I had two taken out as soon as they came out (in my early 20s) as they were very badly angled and causing me a lot of pain. Another one came out a couple of years later, which I still have. It's very hard to clean and I had to get a cavity filled last year, but my dentist doesn't see a need to take it out. The fourth one never appeared... I thought it was going to about 6 years ago, but it didn't happen :?.

Talking of teeth, I need a new dentist -- the clinic I've been with for the last 14 years is inaccessible for me now -- but it seems impossible to find a dental clinic in my area that is accepting new patients to register :(.

No need to take them out unless you have to, that is it is causing you pain. My 2 cents. I still have mine which are slowy coming out. They bother me a little bit, sore, sometimes, but nothing else so I still have them. I have many relatives (cousins, aunts, uncles, grandfather) who are dentists and so I follow their advice.

They played the barenekid ladies/Sarah version of "God rest ye merry Gentlemen" this morning on the radio.

Adding swing to christmas carols... gotta love that!

(I wonder if anyone has made tabs for it? I would love to learn that song)

oops! I meant this to be in the other thread :?

I have all my wisdom teeth, they all fit nicely, and none of them are crooked. I guess it's a good thing I have such a big mouth
