YCN Point Question?

Hi, all! Hopefully someone can help me out with this.

If you place in a Syllabus event at a YCN comp (i.e., in a dance where other dances are leveled, like Bronze Waltz, Silver Tango, Gold Quickstep, etc., but the "Syllabus" dance stands alone [normally VW for Standard, Paso for Latin, Bolero for Rhythm]), how does it figure into your YCN points? Does it count? If so, at what level? Gold?

From what I know, "syllabus" events do not count towards any level at all. It is like dancing "open", which doesn't give you points towards any specific level. For example I believe at a recent school run event in NYC there was no vienesse waltz for standard at the bronze silver or gold levels, but there was a "syllabus" v waltz which people from all of the syllabus (bronze silver and gold) levels decided to enter. I was told after placing in the finals that there was no points that were attributed towards the placement.

"Combined" events awards points at the lowest level that is combined.

Ie an un-differentiated "Open" event that is actually "Pre-Champ + Champ" combined, awards points Pre-Champ.

An undifferentiated "Syllabus" event would normally awards "Bronze" points (but I could see a case being made for Pre-Bronze)

Considering YCN doesn't really exist, points are award on a competition by competition basis. You should contact the competition coordinator about how "points" will be awarded.

How it WAS done was based on whether there was a q final, a semi, or just a final. Eric is right in how the points would count.

Keep in mind though: 1. don't dance newcomer for more than a semester, that's just not fair 2. if you're consistently placing in bronze, move to silver in the next semester and don't just try to be a ribbon collector. That's like being a weird cat lady... and no one likes weird cat ladies. 3. if you're concerned about USA Dance levels, unless it's a USA Dance sanctioned competition, the points don't count 4. if it IS a USA Dance sanctioned competition, they keep track of points for you on the USA Dance website :-D

I agree with Nielsen.

...they keep track of points for you on the USA Dance website :-D

I'm not sure the USA Dance points calculator is to be trusted... last time I or a friend of mine checked our points against the calculator (this was a half year ago or so), it was close but not quite right. Some comps were getting counted twice, or phantom points were showing up or not showing up where they should have. Perhaps it's time to do another check.

That calculator does do some funny things, but it's a nice thought! AND SOMETIMES, it does work :-)

btw, for syllabus one-dance events such as "Open to All Syllabus VWaltz", I would consult with a competition coordinator on points as well. Although, if you're beating normally gold dancers, and you're still schlepping around in bronze, I'd say it's time for you to back your bags and move to silver or higher.

Would say this is probably true for Vwaltz but maybe not so true for Paso or Bolero :raisebro: Just because the state of those dances is generally far below the gold caliber of syllabus in the other four...at least in my experience at recent comps that had combined events (and even those that set aside gold one dance events haha).

Can you post a link to the calculator? I see a beta version of a database that only contains some comps I did in 2009.
