yesterday's activities

Yesterday: work like a maniac to get on the road by 3...drive to Iowa City...forget charger...several other annoyances...looks like I forgot to leave the stress at home

Today began much the same but I've made it almost through Nebraska and things are looking up

Yesterday:

Trip to Newark Airport first thing in the morning; if you believe in the "eat a live frog first thing in the morning and it's the worst thing that will happen all day" theory of life, yeah, nope
One of the worst dance days of the past 5 years; lesson not good, and group class actively terrible; at one point, I lost my temper and went to sit down for rest of the class; was convinced I know nothing and am The Worst Dancer in the World and should just quit; have not felt like this in ages
Spoke to a friend who is an accountant/actuary, and talked briefly about the statement I got from my financial planner; friend could not keep himself from recommending investments in which I have zero interest (pun sort of intended) and, astonishingly, demonstrated that he had not heard a word I'd said other than dollar figures... grump grump
To top it all off, was my birthday, it's a zero year and a big one, and by end of day I was all "it's all downhill from here" grumpy
Did *not* soothe my jangled nerves with alcohol; maybe that would have helped
grump grump
Some years back my pairs skating partner and I had our Worst Practice Ever just a week before the national championships. Stumbled around on the ice clutching at each other like toddlers at a Baby Blades first lesson. Our coach was standing off the ice with her face down on the boards, moaning, as we hesitantly approached her.

Partner: I guess we look like beginners today, huh?
Coach (mumbling into her gloves): And not even promising beginners!

As for your birthday, I won't rub salt in the wounds by wishing a happy one because it wasn't, but just think -- now you're into a 1 year, and everyone who is already in that new decade will regard you as "just a kid" by comparison to them!

(Doesn't help? I'll tiptoe off quietly then. All kinds of sympathy.)

My mind is about as boggled as I've ever known it to be. Do you mean people actually take their phones into the swimming pool with them? I mean..........seriously?! Please tell me it's because there are no safe lockers there to stow valuables? That I could understand, sort of. Although I'd wonder why they didn't just leave the phone at home.

The short answer is yes, numerous people put their phones in a pouch that hangs around their neck and then they can go into the water. The technology is advanced enough that these things really work, and the good ones you can even still continue to use in the pouch (i.e. take underwater photos, etc). This is the one I ordered, and I noticed that many others had as well. Plus they sold them at the gift shop (different brand):

(ETA - the url keeps showing up wonky so I'm separating it above)

I will add that this is not a totally new concept... I also still had some similar fanny pack pouches I had purchased 15-20 years ago for a cruise. I was never brave enough to use them, but I put my phone in my phone pouch and then in the fanny pack and I was able to go on the waterslides that way. My spouse really does not like heat/outside/waterparks, so this was the first time I was the only adult so I couldn't just leave my phone (and other belongings) with him. They do have lockers, but in the end, we just left most stuff at the cabana (most people do.. yes it's a risk but 99.9% of people at waterparks paid to enjoy the waterpark, not steal other people's stuff that they would then have to carry around).

I guess I dropped in from a different century on a faraway planet. I've never even owned a mobile phone. My daughter moved to a part of Scotland where connection is virtually non-existent, and gave up owning a mobile phone. And doesn't miss it. We don't at all criticize people who carry one everywhere, we just find that seeming need to be grafted to one baffling. :jawdrop:

I'm sort of responding to subsequent posts as well - the reality is, cell phones are a borderline necessity for survival these days in the U.S. I can't remember the last time I saw a working payphone (and I used them as a kid). We do still have a landline but people look at us like we have two heads when we tell them that. They really are your lifeline if you get lost, have an emergency, need info, need to contact someone, etc, because so many of the old ways of dealing with this stuff are just no longer in existence. And ngl, in this instance, I was with two kids, one of whom was not mine, 2-3 hours away from home, so some precaution is in order there.

I can see the sense in that. I suppose I'll have to get into that eventually, but so far it's not a problem. On my floor of my condo building, there are six apartments. It's not strictly a seniors residence but it is adults only and the occupants on my floor range in age from about 50 to 80. Three of us have a computer but not a cell phone. Two have cell phones but not a computer. One woman has neither. But most have a Lifeline pendant for the sort of occasions you mentioned, getting lost, needing help in an emergency, etc. You just press a button and a voice speaks from the pendant, telling you where you are, offering to call 911 if you need that. If it detects a fall and the person doesn't answer, it calls an ambulance for them and tells the EMS where the person is.

My vintage landline phones are a collector's hobby. I have one in every room, in all sorts of colours and styles, including a pink Princess phone like I had as a teenager. I hear "We had one like that!" quite often from visitors when they see one or other of my vintage (working) phones. I'm not much into photography, so I don't need to have a camera in my pocket all the time. I don't travel, so I don't need one with me for that -- I can certainly see the need for people who do travel a lot. I'm not resisting cell phones, I just don't need one where and how I live. Yet. When I do, I'll buy one. But I've never learned how to swim and am allergic to chlorine, so I don't even know what people do at pools and water parks. Doesn't a phone slung around the neck whap you in the face if you dive?

Yesterday:
Three loads of laundry sitting by the door laugh at me allllll day; this ain't happening
Iron something to wear out to dinner in fancy restaurant in fancy expensive Connecticut town; my brother and SIL are taking me out for birthday and they Do Fancy, so I crack out something decent and drive an hour and 15 to restaurant; note to self, do not plan dinner in Westport b/c rush hour on the Merritt Parkway is no fun
BFF and her husband come along; a good time is had by all
Drive home shorter and easier

It's Friday right?...doing today now because once I get to son's place it may be a while...

Drive from Sidney NE to Burley Idaho...get on elliptical then swim a bit...both further aggravate current deal in my shoulder...try jacuzzi to some success...return to room...medicate...chat with dh and son on phone...smart water and hot pocket for dinner...irony does not escape me. .channel surf..where's a good 'big bang' re-run when you need it? Can't abide the news...I have a book but have been holding a steering wheel for hours...can't bear the thought of holding anything else ...at least not for longer than it takes to post this

Saturday ..drove from Burley to Portland... a on made tacos...caught him up on The Diplomat

Sunday...toured rhododendron garden, stopped at a cute little German sausage place. .caught some more episodes of The Diplomat and played a bit of Dragonwood...

Today/Mon

Spent about an hour tying up some loose ends for work...Cooked brunch for son and I. Played monopoly on Xbox with son...that was interesting...went to one of those ceramic paint shops. Hit World market on the way home ...ordered Thai food. Visit is finally catching up to me...think it will be an early night

ooo bad me
Friday was slow; highlight of the day was 3 loads of laundry, so that's a very slow day

Saturday:
It's cleaning day! Yay!
While cleaning happens, I go to Costco. On a Saturday morning. What was I thinking? Then Lowe's, ditto
Home, unload Costco loot
Then go to favorite restaurant, where I fix the plantings in their window boxes (long story) and by now it's afternoon and they offer me a glass of sangria; note to self, no day drinking on a hot day for you, missy
Home to clean apartment! I immediately cook something messy so I have to clean the kitchen again; you'd think I'd learn, but it's a pattern, for me: it's clean, so let's make it dirty. whatever.

Sunday:
Drive to Long Island early in the morning to meet a DFer (who is visiting from way out of town) for breakfast at a genuine Long Island-style diner; she has never experienced such a thing, it's a revelation to her; breakfast is what you'd expect from such a place (I have not encountered margarine in decades ew) but she's a delight
Drive to Connecticut to visit brother and SIL; they have planned a family reunion/birthday party; SIL's b'day is this week, mine was last week, and a next-generation cousin wants to hear family history, Bro and SIL plan this event around that; I have hauled out the boxes of family photos reaching back to the early 19th century and bring them with; this cousin is on father's side of the family, so the last member of that generation also comes, and he is full of stories the rest of us don't have, so that's lovely
Cousin is a chef and restaurant professional, and he insists on cooking; omg; his wife is a professional cake decorator in NYC (just imagine; on second thought, no, you can't) and she has done a cake; omg
Long drive home
I have not done this much driving in one day since the old days
Sleep early

Yesterday:
Since Teach is out of town, no lesson; I'm gonna die
Dance Buddy and I go to dinner in a local restaurant we've been hearing about for years; yup, it's as good as everyone says
Stop at ice cream stand for first time this summer; I'm gonna die

I do not die, but I fall asleep very early

Listen in on a staff mtg even though I am out of town because it was to announce a partnership of our non profit with another. In hopes of staying off all of the big for profit competition...staff has been dangling in suspense for quite a while.. hoping this will make us stronger...particularly since son is btwn jobs and dh plans to retire soon so I really hope to be able to handle uncertainties and unexpected expenses for the foreseeable future...
In spite of that, hit the idea store and Nordstrom rack for a few neccessaries b/c bargains. Back to son's place exhausted but get to FaceTime 2 youngest granbabies back home...then take a nap. Order top notch dinner and back to big bang re-runs.

Yesterday:

This no-lesson thing is so disorienting; I spend the day alternately reading and on computer, with a brief trip to Marshalls just to get out of the house
