So I guess I am a fraud after all

If we broke up tomorrow, I'm not sure I'd go back to dance. I think what dance taught me is confidence. I proved to myself that I'm not universally unattractive and that SOME girls will dig me.

So I guess I am a fraud after all

It's been exactly 2 years since I started dancing. Someone on this forum told me that any sort of hobby/activity has a 2 year window where after the 2 years, it either just becomes a part of your life or you give it up. I'm pretty much heading towards the latter at this point. Why? Two reasons...

Continuing to dance when things get tough

@opendoor You are quite correct although your info is kinda outdated. Yes I began ballroom dancing cause I was bored with my career and a lot of my friends were newly engaged/married and so I had time to burn. Also, I saw it as a way maybe to meet more women. None of my initial goals came true...

Continuing to dance when things get tough

@opendoor I'm getting re-engaged into my career. I started ballroom dancing mainly cause I felt disillusioned/bored with my career but now I'm more motivated at work and I'm also looking to take some courses to gain new knowledge. So you're right, now might be time to do so. @RiseNFall...

Continuing to dance when things get tough

I started dancing two years ago. At the time, my career situation was very cushy. Too cushy in fact. I got complacent and it was time for a change. Recently, I've embarked on a new career path and it's great but the thing is, I have to work very hard and I have less energy to maintain dance...

    Is Ballroom dancing expensive? (Article)

Ballroom dance is not gonna be a casual hobby. People either love it and are addicted to it or they decide it's not for them. There are no dabblers. And the main reason for that it is expensive. So you've got to love it. Is it worth it? That's more of a personal question. For me, I find the...

Is it normal to get my blood boil when the teachers focuses on correcting my frame?

Yah they actually did tell me that. They didn't know me at all. I know because they came up to me and congratulated me afterwards and we chatted a bit.

Do you tell people what your goals are? Is it normal to not have any or only vague goals?

I can totally relate to this. Sometimes the people you think would be supportive can actually be resentful or jealous. And yeah, I've definitely gotten negative energy from certain people before when I told them my loft goals. I'd rather just keep the goals to myself and quietly work towards...

Is it normal to get my blood boil when the teachers focuses on correcting my frame?

@raindance Yeah totally agree. If your goal is to just have fun dancing socially, then frame shouldn't be as emphasized as long as the frame isn't too poor. But I love technique and frame is a big part of that. I also get off on the adrenaline of competitions. I've gotten great scores for...

Is it normal to get my blood boil when the teachers focuses on correcting my frame?

@DL Hmm, not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying frame is not that important? I mean, I only been dancing for less than 2 years but I find that if you want to dance competitively, it's ALL about frame and technique. So I guess it depends what your goals are. I feel that most of us here...

Do you tell people what your goals are? Is it normal to not have any or only vague goals?

I don't know. It's an insecurity I have. I think it stems from childhood. I remember telling my parents certain goals I had and they shot it down. Or maybe I'm superstitious in that if I tell people what my goals are, then something will go wrong and it won't happen. I'm just afraid of being...

    Question about maintaining abilities.

Cardio and squats and lunges get the blood flowing and warm up the muscle groups needed for most of the ballroom dances. On days where I manage to squeeze in a gym session before a lesson, I do noticeably better.

    Social Dancing as an Introvert

I'm an introverted guy. I used to be an alcoholic because it was the only way I could enjoy social settings. I needed to feel the buzz in order to have any sort of conversation. I made an knat of myself in more than a number of occasions. I also became overweight and it impacted my self-esteem...

Do you tell people what your goals are? Is it normal to not have any or only vague goals?

I guess my question is generic but for the purpose of staying on topic, do you tell people or make it known what your dancing objectives are? I started ballroom dancing just under 2 years ago almost as a fluke. I had no idea it would be the start of an exciting new journey and chapter in my...

Is it normal to get my blood boil when the teachers focuses on correcting my frame?

Hmm, I'm surprised by the replies so far. I would have thought all of you hardcore dancers here would be all about frame. I am so grateful that my teacher literally forced me to maintain good frame. Yah it's a pain in the knat but over time your body adjusts and the best thing about it? I can...

Potential dance partner is slightly taller than me

@opendoor No. I do appreciate your opinions and I wish I knew how to learn dance at socials for free but it just doesn't gel in my mind. It would be great if someone can actually show me how that works. For me, it takes multiple lessons with a private instructor just to learn a certain...

Potential dance partner is slightly taller than me

@DanceMentor That's very true. I guess with you being a dance teacher, you've seen that a lot. I was like that too. I remember being scared to death trying ballroom dance for the first time. I probably came off as very cold and insecure. Yah the views I'm talking about from these Asian women...

Is being the short male lead equivalent to being the fat ballerina?

@David_D Read my replies in: https://www.dance-forums.com/threads/potential-dance-partner-is-slightly-taller-than-me.48209/page-2 My ex-instructor who I danced with at spotlights/competitions was an Indian woman. There is a current student at my school who is an Arab lady who grew up in Iraq...

Potential dance partner is slightly taller than me

@DanceMentor Not sure what all those posts about learning Asian languages had to do with me or what I said, but it's a cool hobby and good on you for embracing the challenges of learning them. I have a pretty negative attitude when it comes to my heritage. I was born in Canada. I grew up here...

Potential dance partner is slightly taller than me

@lucia_l I live in Canada. I also don't have any association with any Asian Women due to the fact that they primarily prefer white men when it comes to either dancing or dating. I've given up even socializing with any women for any purpose as a result.I'm not a racist. But I've learnt a long...
