We are thrilled to announce our show couple for the 2009 MIT Open
Competition: Professional Standard dancers Jonathan Wilkins and Hazel
Newbury!

Jonathan and Hazel formed a new partnership just last year, in October
2007. They began competing that November, and placed second overall
at the Blackpool Closed 2007. Since then, they have continued to
place among the top three couples in competitions around the world.
We look forward to seeing them perform at the MIT Open before they
head back to England to compete at the Blackpool Dance Festival in
May.

Spread the word!

MIT has just announced that they've had a change in their show couple. The show couple is now slated to be: Luca and Loraine Baricchi.

OMG! Now I HAVE to go:) You're right, Larinda, way better than what was announced before!

Please let us know if there is even a possibility they'll be doing privates while up there.

Registration is open!

Recent announcements about the 2009 MIT Open:

- $6,000 in prize money for Pre-Champ, Champ and Open events
- a fabulous performance by Luca and Loraine Baricchi
- a distinguished panel of adjudicators under the chairman Dan Calloway
- all 19 dances in Beginner to Championship levels
- flexible registration rules
- two days of high-energy ballroom dancing!

Visit the comp web site at ballroom.mit.edu/comp for info on non-competitor tix to the show.

*** The regular registration deadline is Sunday, April 5, late registration closes on Sunday, April 19.***

Please be advised that we may have to close registration for certain events ahead of time if the number of competitors exceeds a certain number. Register early to secure your spot on the dance floor!

The MIT Ballroom Dance Team is proud to present lectures by world class dancers, judges, and coaches Luca and Loraine Baricchi. These are open to dancers of all levels, and partner is not required, but recommended.

Lectures will be on Sunday, April 26, during the MIT Competition. Location will be on campus, but not necessary at the competition venue.

We are in the process of determining the best time on. Please take the survey by Monday, March 23, 11:59pm. We will announce official times, and how to purchase tickets short afterwards.

Survey: http://spreadsheets0.google.com/viewform?formkey=cHB6eW5kenI4T29rVWJqbjdDMEVJWlE6MA by Monday, March 23, 11:59pm

Date: Sunday, April 23, 2009
Location: TBA, on MIT campus

The events/sessions as listed are what's planned, barring unforeseen circumstances. I check with one of the comp coordinators last night.

I hope I can convince whoever is driving for club to stay later on Sunday... the 8 hour drive means no American for me otherwise.

Just a reminder that the deadline for survey for Luca and Lorraine's lecture is tonight! We will look at the numbers and make final arrangements based on the survey results. Hopefully we can make a final announcement about time, location, and tickets soon.

One extra day for regular registration

The registrar for the MIT Open has asked me to post that the deadline for regular registration without a late fee has been extended to Monday April 6th.

But if you know you're coming, why not register now? You know you want to!

Cheers

This is NOT an official announcement from the MIT Open, just me giving people a heads up.

As you know regular registration closes on Monday. Looking at the current registrations and normal registration surge patterns, I expect the MIT staff to ask me to close registration for beginner and some intermediate events early -- I would guess between 24-36 hours early. Last year there was a limit of around 192 couples in beginner and ~150 in intermediate due to scheduling implications. Normal last weekend registration surge would put us at or near those numbers on Sunday.

If you are planning to enter those events, I would suggest getting your registrations taken care of soon. If you're part of a team that does team registrations, please make sure your captain/registration officer is aware that some events may close before the deadline.

Wow, just heard back from the organizers -- they are requesting much lower event-closure limits this year. I expect to start closing some events today.
