Hmm. The way everybody has been describing it, son sounds to me like a combination of rumba and salsa;

If you mean Cuban rumba, it's nothing like it. If you mean ballroom rumba, perhaps -- it's a slow dance, sensual in a sedate way, as the music suggests. No fancy turn patterns or spin spin spin.

I mean ballroom rumba. I'm not exactly sure what Cuban Rumba is, actually! :shock: :shock:
Which reminds me, my salsa instructor dances the rumba in a very salsa-like way. So there, I've danced son! Sort of...

What happened was that selfmade musicians (Oriente Province) were Soneando around late 1800s. This type of ballroom Rumba took place during the troop excahnge between Havana and Oriente. To me, sounds like an irony that Son was banned from ballrooms, but Rumba was not :roll: . It looks to me that ballroom Rumba was a disguise of Son.

I hear some of those so called Rumbas and some antique Sons, and I don't hear a lot of difference :cry:

Sometimes, people put too much of their opinions to replace the facts and we all end up with twisted info. Now, keep in mind that not all I learnt from the books in Cuba may be accurate. I grew up with the Revolution and some old musicians have showed me some inaccuracies in Castro's theory of history

I've just viewed a VHS documentary: "Son, la antesala de la Salsa." Eloy Crespo, Cuban musicologist, affirms that the first signs of Son date back to 1582 :shock: With a Quartet by Pascual Ochoa, Pedro Almansa and the sisters Teodora and Micaela de la Mateodora.

If the info is correct, then Son Montuno had to have presided Son :?: :|

The video includes testimonials from Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Rosendo Rosell, Alvita, Arturo Sandoval and others. A great footage of Torniquete is seen there :applause:

legal way for U.S. citizens to go to Cuba?

I remember reading a couple months back on here about a group that puts together Salsa tours to Cuba from the U.S. (including getting you permission to go). Does anyone know anything about this? I'd love to take a Salsa/warm weather vacation this winter and Cuba would see to be ideal. Thanks.

TE, according to my Cuban friends. that video is pretty much on target as far as authenticity, social or performance wise. Any other Cubanos in the house to verify this? Thank goodness there isn't anyone flying through the air or spinning like a cartoon tasmanian devil all over place. :lol:
