Non-open events such as encuentros and some marathons do tend to converge towards private gatherings where most people know each other, especially if the criteria for selection lies entirely in the hands of a few organizers. That said, knowing who attends such events instead of having a non-negligible number of strangers is an advantage, in that you have a better idea of the quality of dances you're going to get.

As much as I hate networking for the sake of getting in to a group, I can see the benefits of having such a (reasonable?) guarantee.

Martin sounds like a reasonable organizer, and it's really nice to know that people like him are out there. Although this:

Dancers want a balanced event of leaders and followers, and compatible dance levels. So that’s what the organizers try to give them.

I'm pretty sure this is why I wasn't allowed to participate in an upcoming marathon, which is still accepting leaders.

I think if the registration isn't wholly on a first-come-first-served basis, then the organizers must consider factors such as their experience, levels, roles, etc.; I'm unconvinced that the selection process is entirely without bias towards people who have been in previous iterations of the event or "known" (in some way) to the organizers or their friends, since some tendency to do so will creep in, despite the organizers' best intentions.

P.S.: I'm not accusing Martin of this, by the way, just asserting that these things are inevitable, but some organizers have and will be like this to varying degrees. As long as they're transparent about it, no problems on my side.
