ballroom gown rental

I hate to recommend myself so I will just mention that I also have 20+ balroom gowns for rent that I frequently rotate which usually come from high end designers. They are from 150-275. However, What kckc said, I don't really have much above size 8. Good luck with your search wherever you end up going
 
I've happily rented (and purchased) some great gowns from Katarzyna...highly recommend her. She has great taste in gowns, and good connections.

I also highly recommend Kat, she has fabulous taste in gowns and good service too! I also happily bought and rented gowns from her before, always good experience.

I third the recommendation for Kat. Very nice dresses and a lot of variety. All dresses are high quality too :)!!
 
Reviving this thread- I am not in the market for a new dress- although I have found a Standard dress I am considering buying- but I like to look at pretty sparkly dresses, and after a long time, I was checking out some of the rental/rent to buy dress websites- and all I can think is OMG! these places are a rip off- most of the pre owned dresses are For Sale for upwards of $3500, some as high as $5000. We have many discussions on price of dresses, but I cannot imagine paying that much for pre-owned dresses, some that have been also rented out x number of times. I understand that dresses are costly, but I would rather pay those $$ for a new dress. You can get a new designer dress for that price. Are folks really paying that much?
Also, are there any other thoughts on off loading some nice dresses, other than back to the designer for resale and getting the best price for them? Looking at some of these sites, it appears there is a market, or maybe there isn't.
 
i've found rhythmic to be pretty reasonable (well, as reasonable as it is in this world) in the resale market - 4500 dresses being sold used for about 2000-2500. encore to me is the most ridiculous. They are often trying to sell those dresses practically at the new price - especially recently. and it seems like they're trying to get out of the rentals. My favorite is when you look at a dress that they're trying to sell for $3500 and the designer says "unknown." Sorry, if you bought a dress new for over $3500, you know who the designer is. That feels like they're taking $500 ebay dresses, maybe putting some more stones on them and trying to sell them like designer dresses.

the biggest issue, however with consignment is the owner themselves. The consignment agent will take 30-40% so often the owner won't come down off a price because they want to clear XXX on the dress. It's part of the reason those dresses sit in inventory forever.

I just send a couple of dresses to rhythmic because they seem to be the happy medium, and as a person who's rented from them, I loved their service. I tried to sell them myself, but it was just too much darn effort. I have bought used dresses from people directly, often saving me money and giving them more money than they would if you used a third party.
 
There is a girl from my studio who bought a latin dress for $3600 from a well known designer and wore it for 2 years to several comps. She traded it in for a new dress, and I saw the designer website listed it for sale at $3600. I think that's nuts!
Some of the dresses on Encore website are way overpriced for pre-owned gowns. Yes Rhythmic rentals is more reasonable, but the quality of their dresses can sometimes be questionable, and I say this as someone who has used their services in the past.
I have some dresses I'm trying to offload, and I totally agree it is a PITA trying to sell them on your own.
 
When I stopped doing smooth and Rhythm I consigned my dresses with Rhythmic Rentals...I have nothing to say but goods things about this company. I have a few that rent often and 2 have been sold. They disburse payment twice a month and it is a nice alternative to selling on your own. So the deal is you tell them what you want to net for the dress and once you reach that in rental or sale, they own the gown.... I like that my net amount was not that far away from their asking price so the chance of sale is good... Sure, it takes time but if you are not anxious to sell right away it is a good alternative.

BTW, I think I consigned 6 or 7 gowns with them and all of them were either designer gowns or gowns in the 4K range so while I agree some gowns are at the low end, not all of them are!! I think the key is that you have to be reasonable as to what you want for your gowns.
 
Jan brings up a valid point, the gowns in inventory aren't just sale inventory to the consignment shop (i.e. a cost due to the capital they tie up while waiting to be sold), they're also revenue sources with rental income they generate, so in some cases the sticker prices might be high *because* the extra rental income more than makes up for the longer wait before it sells.
 
Right I agree with all of the above. However, you can opt for not renting the dress on these websites and having them listed for sale only. Not all dresses will take the wear and tear. You have to know your dresses. So renting may not be an option for all. If you rent, you may end up having to lower your price to sell anyway because the condition of the gown may no longer be pristine.
Having said that, I still think that putting up a used dress For Sale at the same price you bought it new is a little crazy.
