I think maybe that explanation is a little overcomplicated? What I was taught is that cross-system just means both partners are on the same foot, and in parallel they are on opposite feet. Nothing about how to walk it. (Though it follows if you're walking in a straight line, you have to walk on three tracks in cross system.)
