Chicago Harvest Moon - anyone going?

They've put together a nice judging panel for an event on what I'm sure is a limited budget -- Dan Rutherford, Nicole Carroll, Christine Zona, Rosendo Fumero and Kathryn Schaeffer

Alain Doucet , Jean Marc Genereux and France Mousseau are performing for the pro show - I don't believe I've seen them before - any thoughts?

They are wonderful to watch, especially the 4 of them together. You won't be disappointed!

Just noticed you didn't inlcude Anik. Is she joining them? If not, make my "4" a "3!"
anik is pregnant and won't be dancing

this is slightly off-topic, but i started the topic, so...nyah.

Can you define "nice"? it's only my fourth comp, and i'm still learning what constitues a good judge.

I had coaching with Rufus Dustin last week (first time, very interesting) and he was mentioning that judges have to just focus on timing and whether a couple is on the beat. so what's the difference between a good judge and bad.

I'll just assume you are asking an open-ended question to everyone.

i am doing open int'l latin - bronze and silver.

This competition thing is most curious (to me, not to the partner, who is quiiiite skeert of it :D But then, so am I, or I'd have already done it! )

I can only speak for myself, but i love competition. don't be skeert. you get to do the dance like 4-5 times depending on how many levels and scholarships you enter, so you can screw up and not worry about it. i bet there is like a zillion threads of competition v social dancing.

you know macha, I can sniff the competitor in you a MILE away....you should come up for it...or for the indiana challenge in feb....heck there are newcomer heats that don't look much different from beginner group class... and there are so many divisions...its just a ton of fun and people from our studio with little experience/skill are going just to try one out....not paying for a zillion heats but doing a few.....and then there are the truly insane ones who are doing more than 20 or 30  but who's counting 8)

competition for me isnt the time to be scared...that's when you're already strapped into the ride...that's show time...its NOWNOWNOWNOW    when I still have some time to fix stuff, but not much time that is the scarey part.....as she continues to procrastinate in a paralytic funk

Very little can top a good horse show- but I have the feeling my mind could be changed at least partly, fairly quickly.

I know the male isn't up for it, but I think I'll definitely shoot for February. Is there a link for that one, or is it this same "group"?

What I meant by "nice" here is that these judges all were very successful in their styles as competitors and are well-respected as coaches. Does that mean they will be good judges? No, not really, but I think it increases the chances.

At the newcomer/bronze level, yes, the judges will probably focus on two things: timing and posture. But as the dancing improves up through syllabus and especially into open, the differences between the couples can become much more nuanced and the judges need to be better trained at quickly assessing a couple's performance.

well first of all, if you can swing it...you dont have to dance w/ your guy...get a willing Am guy from your studio or and instructor depending on your wallet...

the feb even 23-26 just google indiana challenge....don't know if this years or last years will come up....you can also google second street dance studio which sponsors it and if their site is up (they were having problems last week) you can get it from there....the event is at the Radisson in merrillville...used to be the Holiday Star

Oh  , I know what I'll do- I'll just bitch and nag and whine- no male can withstand that. I'll erode his fear and worry right down :D

Failing that, THEN I'll try to find a partner
