Competition dress choice; heel height; re-wearing dresses; & salsa/mambo question

I bought a couple curling irons and some products a few weeks ago in the hopes that I could gradually learn to do my own hair (for smaller/more casual events), but after a couple tries I can see it's going to be a long road, possibly longer than I have remaining lifespan.
Doing one's own hair is substantially more difficult than doing other peoples' hair, anyway.

Me too! And I am very, very grateful for that. However, I'm still going to wear suntan-colored fishnets to limit the amount of tanning products I have to use.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way. Tan fishnets over pale legs are not a good look. Sorry to burst that bubble!

You can try tan hose under tan fishnets (both over pale legs), but that can get pretty uncomfortable, and may not give the look you want, either.

But generally, the ladies talking about fishnets helping the look of the leg, are talking about putting them over tanned (often heavily tanned) legs.

Are we talking tanned legs and upper body, or only tanned legs?

My daughter is wearing tan fishnets over pale legs in the video I posted yesterday. The contrast between legs and arms is kind of weird, but I don't think tanning the legs only would help.

I do wonder if black fishnets would look better by making it clear the color is coming from the stockings.

I was expecting, based on what I've been told from the female instructors at my studio & what I've read on DF, to use fake tan (whether spray-on, lotion, or a combination of both) on my hands, arms, back, and chest. The Capezio professional weight fishnets in Suntan would be all my legs needed (I thought). Then I'd use a makeup version of fake tan (bronzer?) for my face, neck, & fronts and backs of my ears.

I would definitely not wear tan fishnets if my arms/chest/back remained white. For the studio mini-match, Pro says I can get away without tanning, but at a real comp it's not even open for discussion.

I believe that there are very different expectations of junior dancers. Looking at the video again, I would either not worry about the leg/arm contrast, or try lighter colored fishnets (if easy to do). Definitely not black fishnets.

So if you have a decent makeup artist, you can let them know what products irritate your skin (latex, especially), if you know, and they should be able to work around it. for your face and neck, you'd use a darker foundation, not bronzer. The fake tanner can be hard to match - i usually recommend a decent airbrush tan. Then you can add additional product on top if you need.

I wear Capezio professional weight fishnets in Caramel over my snake-belly-white legs. It works out fine. I tried Suntan once. Only once. Gave them away.

If you're doing Smooth, the level of tanner is not the same as for Latin/Rhythm anyway.

My practice Capezios are Caramel, which I think is a lovely color. But I have the Suntan ones for competing, since at our mini-match we'll be doing both rhythm & smooth, so I'll have to be tan for everything (unless I decide to blow off the entire tanning thing, since it's not a "real" comp).

You can say that again. Among other things, juniors have to navigate labyrinthine dress regulations that differ in incompatible ways from organization to organization and competition to competition. I think she got the fishnets when it looked like she was going to be going to a competition that required them but that she didn't end up going to, for example. One of the nice things about adult pro-am is that you pretty much only have to satisfy your own aesthetic sense, with little in the way of arbitrary rules.

Is the requirement for fishnets just for pro/am students? I rarely see them on pros and high level amateurs.

I remember Larinda saying something about fishnets a few years back and sure enough, a search turned up this (she was judging at Heart of America):

"No it's probably not going to affect your placements. I did not look at any single woman say "I see the smile of your butt cheek or I see the cellulite, I see it jiggle, or I see broken veins or I see bruises or I see nobby wrinkly knees... I can't mark that."

Just remember if you're looking down at yourself wearing a skirt you don't see nearly the same thing that the rest of us judges see, or the audience see that is sitting bum level to you. Honestly I don't want to see it when your skirt flies up.

So my question is... do you really want people looking at and making note of your jiggles? Cause we all see it. "

While fishnets vs no fishnets has been debated forever, I thought I’d share pics from my recent (terrible) comp- similar positions with my legs. Black dress- no fishnets (Airbrush tan, aery jo and Gleam products). Blue dress- fishnets. Legs in blue just look a little more uniform.
