You will note that the slope is linear . . .
Easiest and simple observation:
March 2 -- 100 cases
March 10 -- 1000 cases (actually 994)
Doing nothing implies
March 18 --- 10,000 cases (the graph shows the US is on track to hit this)
March 26 --- 100,000 cases
April 3 --- 1,000,000 cases
April 11 -- 10,000,000 cases
April 19 -- 100,000,000 cases (1/3 population of US)
The goal of social distancing is to stop this curve from being log-linear and flatten it. With testing ramping, it's possible to stay on this trajectory in the near term, but the CDC is probably looking forward toward end of March to see whether the US is approaching a million cases or whether the spread has slowed. Hence, the current time frame of all closures. There are probably smarter people then me looking at this.
Multiply these numbers by 15% and that is how many hospital beds are needed. Multiply by 5% to find the number of ICU beds needed.
