Covid-19 NON DANCE debate

So unless the mask only nights are almost unattended, people will wear a mask if it's required, rather than not come? Interesting.
So it is the West Coast swing people who require the masks. And there are generally world champions teaching the group classes, so they still have a lot of people attending the classes and then the parties afterwards. Other nights have different themes.

So many people refused to get vaccinated because of very rare heart complications among young males that were resolved within days at the hospital, while COVID itself can seriously damage the heart. This is what I've read today:

"People infected with COVID-19 were roughly 47 times more likely to have a heart attack within four weeks of being exposed to the virus than uninfected people within four weeks of vaccination, according to a new study underlining the continuing risk of the virus.

The pre-print study of COVID patients in Hong Kong has not been peer-reviewed yet or accepted for publication. It was a joint effort of scientists at the University of Hong Kong and Oxford in the UK."

Personally, when I got vaccinated, my heartrate was only elevated for about two days and only mildly. When I had Delta, my RESTING heart rate went from the low 50s to the 120s and stayed there for five days. Basically, I felt as if was jogging for 5 days straight. No wonder I was exhausted and lost seven pounds (and I was not overweight to begin with).

I had the elevated heart rate thing for several weeks and I lost more than 10 lb. Fortunately I'm fully recovered with the exception of tinnitus and a swollen joint in my toe, but it was not fun at all.

I think you mentioned that you contracted COVID before the vaccine was available. I was fully vaccinated with Moderna when I came down with Delta COVID and have absolutely zero doubt that without the vaccine, I would have been a whole lot sicker. It stunned me that I was as sick as I was, given that I was vaccinated and not counting having very well controlled diabetes, I'm perfectly healthy and only 47.

I'm sorry you still have to deal with some issues, like tinnitus!

We had an interesting experience in our family. Our 3 grown kids met up in Europe. 2 kids vaxxed and boosted. The other only has 2 vaccines. Didn’t wear masks much. Lots of socializing and laughing in indoor bars. Boosted kid #1 gets a “cold”. Tests negative. Boosted kid #2 catches “cold” from #1 and has same experience. “Colds” last 3 days with residual coughing. Vaxxed twice kid catches a worse “cold” from #2 and does test positive for Covid. He gets sicker and for longer than the others but also makes a full recovery. Parents also traveling elsewhere but have 2 boosters and wearing KN 95 masks in all crowded spaces and otherwise stick to well ventilated spaces. Don’t get sick. Notice most people wearing masks in a non-effective manner, lots of coughing in airports. People are tired of Covid and precautions. My response is “Did you get tired of using birth control?” Our precautions are no hardship and personally I’m really enjoying not having a “cold” for almost 3 years. I’m not going back to exposing myself as much to respiratory viruses.

Yes, those vaccines are really reducing the length and severity to the point that it's very rare that someone gets more than a minor cold. Thanks for the real life examples.

I still have friends in the dance world where they will not attend dances where proof of vaccine is required because they don't believe in vaccines. Their belief can be for various reasons and I have no way of changing there point of view.

I got covid really bad before they head vaccines, and now I'm boosted once. Last month I got covid for a second time and it was a very minor cold.

I also make the assumption that there are a lot of people who are boosted and don't even realize they have covid. More importantly, their body fights it off so well that they are not very contagious.

As I understand, the home tests especially the text covid when it is contagious. That's not to say we can rely on the home tests in this way, but it is an indicator assuming the test did not produce a faulty result. Further, people that are vaccinated tend to have a shorter time in which they test positive, and perhaps sometimes there is no time they test positive, and they have either no symptoms or very light symptoms.

I'm vaccinated and boosted. I think I tested positive for 7 or 8 days. (I had a self-imposed criterion for leaving the house and it was 10 days since first symptom and only after testing negative again. So I tested a lot near the end. )

The tests are only 60% reliable due to user skill in administration and how fast vaccinated people fight off the virus. So that is a very high false negative rate.

Yes, I don't disagree with you. There does seem to be reasonably good evidence that vaccinated people are not passing the virus on to others at the same rate, mainly because they're not getting in sick. And the test can be an indicator about someone's ability to transmit the virus, but unfortunately is a data point that cannot be completely relied upon.

If someone is coughing without a mask, and in range for long enough to expel enough virus, other people will get infected. Drives me crazy when people remove their mask to cough. Basic understanding of transmission is lacking.
