I found the film at a site called http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0397381/

I have never heard about this website. Have you? Can I trust them?

Lucretia, as far as I know imdb (internet movie database) is an informational web site about movies, actors, directors etc., I am not sure whether they are actually selling DVDs...

A pretty weird website. I'm not sure you can buy anything. There is no price. It seems like beeing some kind of fanclub for films.

Anyhow

Here is a quote from Silverdocs 2004 ( http://www.silverdocs.com/films/guide/damel.aspx )

"To live in exile is one of the most wrenching yet potentially redemptive experiences a people can endure. Such heartache and hope defines life for the many Cubans living in New York and New Jersey that are profiled in Heddy Honigmann's DAME LA MANO. Taking its title from the song of the same name, the film is an energetic exploration of music and dance and the sustenance they provide to a people far from their homeland.

An ordinary diner in New Jersey by day, "La Esquina Habanera" comes to life every Sunday night when it becomes a temple of rumba unlike any other dance club in the United States. Almost unknown outside of Cuba, the rumba has its roots in ancient African songs introduced to the New World by slaves, which over the centuries blended with Spanish musical influences brought by Cuba's colonial rulers. The people who go to La Esquina Habanera aren't just there to dance-they're there to connect with their community and themselves. Rafaela is a full-bodied 62-year-old cook who sizzles as much on the dance floor as she does in the kitchen. David is the director of the house orchestra and recalls the "prison rumbas" from his time behind bars for avoiding the war in Angola. Karim uses dance to deceive her greatest enemy-cancer. Honigmann combines interviews with members of this exiled community with the music to which they sing, dance and love so much.

This lively, musical, colorful film vividly illustrates why music provides this community with a true breath of life."

Watch the film if you have a chance to do it. I recorded it on my video and happened to overwrite it a few days later. I have only seen 15 minutes and I want mooooooore!

That is my conclusion as well. I've send a request to the Swedish Televison. They may sometimes sell videos for private use. Lets hope!

Good luck with that, hope you get it.

It's a shame how little video material is available for afro-cuban dancing:
no instructional videos, to the best of my knowledge, and very few documentaries/recorded performances, which are hard to find for purchasing (as you might already noticed  )

Yes I agree. I would love to hear about more about rumba an the roots of salsa. And I may probably never afford going to Cuba. Let's hope some Cubans comes to our salsaweekend.

Sagitta - me sitting here in another corner was "astonished" that you had an option :o  . You can go there - to "La Esquina Habanera"?!!???!! I envy you ()

Sometimes I realize that I havn't completely understood that this is a worldwide forum. ....

imdb.com is generally trusted as a great source of information.
The documentary sounds cool...

I've been using IMDB for years. It's an excellent impartial source of information on films/videos etc.

The Swedish Television said no, I send them the question about who have the rights.

Do anyone know a place where you can buy single copies of documentary film? The IMDB seems to be a good source of information but there is no buy option.

Ha, on IBMD I found the agency for this film. I had to register myself but since you told me it is a trustable a website I dared to do that.

(I always try to avoid registrrering - spam mails  )

Hi Luc,

I saw this film on the flight back from my recent holiday (yay for the personal inflight entertainment system -- the choice was amazing! :D).
Wow! I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who gets a chance to see it. The scenes from La Esquina Habanera were absolutely infectious. Nearly had me jump up and tembleque up & down the aisle (I managed to restrain myself -- I only shimmied frantically in my seat, which my SO thought was very amusing ).

And that hunky dance teacher. 56!? Never!

Not to mention Rafaela the 62 year old cook/rumbera!

Haven't seen this film but it sounds inspirational. I'll make a point of seeing it.

Rosa :)
