Favorite Baby Names

growing up greek, i've always been surrounded by friends with such names. they are still very much in common use. :)

Yes, I know it. Back in California I had a Greek-American co-worker--and there was an Athena in his circle of friends. I thought there was also a Persephone as well...

my son's godfather is "socrates" (but pronounced "saw-KRAH-tee" in greek), had a close friend we called "fanoula", which i always thought adorable (her name was theofanou). called her "fa" for short. :)

had a friend names "alithea" (truth), but in the greek pronunciation: "ah-LEE-thee-uh". pretty name.

my brother's name is "kleanthis". very greek. :)

Ancient Greek history is so interesting. The PBS series from 2000, The Greeks (narrated by Liam Neeson) was very good. Easy to get on DVD. The follow up was The Spartans...

Another favorite name of mine with roots in Greek is Zoe (from Greek for "life"). As in the actress Zooey Deschanel (of Bridge to Terabithia) and Zoe Saldana (of Center Stage and Avatar)...

yes, i've always loved that name as well. but with the greek pronunciation it is prettier... the last syllable is accented, not the first. it is the greek word for "life" in the contemporary language, as well, not a derivative.

Thanks for the info--always something new to learn!

French actress Sophie Marceau, though not really a household name, did not hurt the popularity of the name at all! (She was the princess in Braveheart who fell in love with Mel Gibson; and she was the face on the French franc coin after Catherine Deneuve.)
