Well, here's the story.
I show up at the competition, and I am really really nervous. I'm not much of a performer, and I worry about pretty much everything. There were all these very professional-looking, rhinestone-covered people walking around very puposefully, or practicing....very intimidating! I was sort of lost and a friend of mine at the studio was lending me a smooth dress, and she wasn't there and I was kind of freaking out. So finally she showed up and I put on the dress and then she was like "you're not wearing enough makeup." (Note: I am not much of a makeup wearer. I probably have a total of 8-10 cosmetic items.) So she puts on all this eyeshadow and lipstick etc. on me and cements my hair down with approximately 8 billion gallons of hairspray. It was weird. I don't like hairspray. I ended up looking rather nice, though, which was a surprise considering I expected to look a little like a tramp.
But on to the dancing. First up was foxtrot, hands down my worst dance. So I was like "aaaaghhhhh." But it went okay. I spent most of my time concentrating on heel leads and toe releases; the following wasn't too difficult. Then waltz, which was alright, but not great. Then tango, which is my best smooth, definitely, but my coach didn't lead me through any of the cool steps we had practiced and instead led something I had never done before! But apparently I followed pretty well, so its all good.
My rhythm dances were by far the best. I don't remember what order they went in, but they all went SO well. I even remembered the arm styling! The scariest part, though, was during one of the salsa heats (I guess AM competitions involve "non-competitive" dances like salsa, hustle, WC swing....I never knew you could compete in any of those). Anyway, there were supposed to be two other couples on the floor with me, but neither of them showed! So I did a solo salsa. It was scary, but it went so amazingly well...it was actually pretty exhilirating!
Then of course, there was a lot of social dancing, which was loads of fun. But I think I need to get out there more....I'm getting too used to my instructor's lead.
Anyway, I just had a fabulous, fabulous time, despite the fact that I was completely worked up about it beforehand. Everything turned out great! I got a number of ribbons and new smooth shoes and costume jewlery (oh my God....the bling!) and some great photos. So, yay!
