Happy and/or Random Thoughts #3

Things that keep us awake nights.

If, at a French dinner party, the main meal is considered the oeuvre and the pre-dinner snacks are the hors d'oeuvres, then at an Indian dinner party where the main meal is curry, would the pre-dinner snacks be extracurricular?

Random: During the last year I started doing my solo practice on the exercise studio floor at the Y during “open” periods. When I’d use the room, there would occasionally be another person using it for a solo pilates session, or a solo Zumba workout, or a skipping rope workout, or something like that. Last night when I was there, there were 5 other people, in and out, using the room. I couldn’t help but play a game with myself, making a list of how many of them I think will still be around in 6 weeks. (I predict the first one out will be the teenager wearing his hoodie up, trying to work on handstands.)

Hmm. Thinking about it a bit more, I’m now feeling a bit small and mean about the teenager in his hoodie and thinking that he won’t last. The demographic at the particular Y branch where I practice is mid-thirties-parents-with-young-kids, middle-agers, and the silver-sneakers. It’s the smallest Y in the area, with just treadmills and weight machines, and the exercise studio with classes there are mainly yoga or spinning. There is no basketball court, no pool, no running track.

I think Teen arrived alone, and he may have come to the Y hoping to run across classes or programs that have other teenagers in them. He didn’t appear to have any particular practice/workout routine and randomly switched from handstanding, to boxing-style jabbing, to some tiny footwork moves. He didn’t have headphones; he didn’t ask the staff about using the video/dvd programs for self-workouts. At first I thought he might be a boxer, then I thought perhaps a hip-hopper, or maybe a cheerleader. But I didn’t stop my own practice long enough to figure it out.

He was motivated enough to save his money to pay for a Y membership. Even if he won’t find a lot of people his age at this particular Y, maybe all he needs is someone to help him put together a structured workout/practice plan for his particular activity. It can be hard to stay motivated if you don’t have a plan. If he doesn’t last, it might just be because no one gave him a bit of a helping hand to figure out that part.

So…. I guess if I see him again, it wouldn’t kill me to take a few moments to at least say Hi and find out a little bit about him, any give him a bit of encouragement.

One thought on this, based on my own experience: he may have been visiting on a guest pass. My local Y allows one free guest pass per calendar year, after that it's $15 per visit. I used to attend fitness classes that way. My attendance was too sporadic to justify the monthly membership so I just paid the guest pass fee each time.

Otherwise, it will be interesting to see if there is a follow-up on this young man. (see what I did there)

Random: I need to replace boots to trek through muddy fields to check tile lines and fences. And we’ve been really wet this past year, so I mean muddy. Trying to decide between LLBean boots or Hunter wellies. Bean boots are easier for me to get on and off, but are harder to clean off the muck with the buckle across the ankle, and I’ve found to be a bit wide in the calf for me. Wellies are heavier but in the past I’ve found to fit better in foot and calf. Hmm, what to do.

Random:
I voted this morning. I was only the 8th in-person voter for the day so far (usually, I'm somewhere in the 30s).

Further random: The local referendum question about the school district had a typo in it ("it's" instead of "its"). The election judges said that I wasn't the only one who had commented on that (which I take to be a hopeful sign).

And furthermore, wee should awl rely on spell cheque more then we due. Its a grate weigh to avoid miss takes. Eye no aye all ways do. Thats why this post is holy accurate in both grammar an spelling.
