The significance lies in the fact that you're accepted by the Mundial committee and allowed to start in BsAs. That's important.
But if it is just being used for marketing purposes, no one is really checking.
Ask questions, meet dancers, and be part of the conversation.

So 'starting in BsAs' means they're sofa surfing in the rest of the world plying their trade? It's no more significant than creating a new 'competition' to score in and claim some credit. It's more important whether you're perceived to be able to teach, or perform, well in the rest of the world. The relevance of the Mundial committee, or anyone else, is questionable as a standard unless it offers a 'standard' that others accept. It clearly doesn't impact run-of-the-mill AT teachers. The significance lies in the fact that you're accepted by the Mundial committee and allowed to start in BsAs. That's important.
I doubt it, except for the competitive afficionado. Strictly/DWTS has more impact - at least amongst those who still watch 'TV' as opposed to 'media' (although probably not the reasons, nor the impact, we would like). Actually social dancing in public (e.g. shopping mall, public plaza, etc), whatever level, appears to have greater significance. However, unique dance personalities may actually draw some public attention to tango through styling, clothing, youth, or eye-catching performances.
I doubt it. In Hamburg, we dance publicly about six times a year in shopping malls, not to mention spontaneous flash mobs. Each time, I hand out a city map with all the studios and milongas to passersby. The effort is high, the return almost zero...social dancing in public (e.g. shopping mall, public plaza, etc), ..appears to have greater significance.

Yes, that's the hard part. Almost no one responds to handouts or public demonstrations. It's very hard to get people to commit to taking a series of classes or even beginning the process. Each time, I hand out a city map with all the studios and milongas to passersby. In other words, you support the targeted poaching of ballroomers and salseros?..wouldn't be interested unless they already had an interest in taking some sort of dance..
Of course! They need to move on to better thingsIn other words, you support the targeted poaching of ballroomers and salseros?

I don’t know about ballroomers. It is a very tough sale to salser@s. I can count on my fingers of my one hand the number of regular salser@s that became regular tanguer@s. Right now only one who was a very bad bachata/salsa dancer, gave it up after taking tango. Is decent tango dancer. At one time over a decade back, I managed to convince four or five at the same time. They went to classes regularly. Came to some practicas and a few milongas. Then dropped out of tango after a year. There was another good salsa dancer, who gave up salsa and became a good tango dancers. After three or four years, gave up dancing completely. Another bachata dancer who became tango dancer but very irregular one. All three followers. Try as hard, I can’t remember any other transition that lasted more than two years. We have a big communities of salsa, Westies, Lindy, tango and fusion. There is very little overlap. Not even between Lindy and Westies. And between Westies and fusion. My guess is big enough communities, is a disincentive to take up another dance. In other words, you support the targeted poaching of ballroomers and salseros?
Actually, NYC hosted the USA Mundial in 2010 before it was moved to California. You can see vids of the competitions if you search the Tangobro You tube channel for - Argentine Tango: 4th USA Tango Championship 2010 Tangobro. The later championship in 2023 was a local event, not part of the Mundial. There was a small nyc one a few years ago but only 4 couples competed since people care a lot less about competition here than the west coast.

it’s probably 95% more about the economic benefit than the danceI see the Mundial as an effort to maintain control over "Argentine tango" in Argentina, including the economic benefit. If one wanted to promote tango internationally, one would change the venue internationally.
