how are your lessons going? thread II

Pro is out of the country for a few weeks, so all lessons are with New(er) Guy. We have been working on various dances that I don't usually do partially so that I could help him fill out his entries at the team match. Turns out that for the most part he's not going to need me to do that!! I definitely get to do the smooth dances with him and some WCS, but we may not get to show off Bolero, Swing, and Hustle. Dang! I think he's going to clear one or two hustle for me, just because we've had so much fun with it. I emphasized that I have gotten a lot out of working on the Bolero and Swing with him even if we don't do it in the team match and encouraged him to give the slots to his regular students. (He would have been willing to give me equal standing with them because I do a lot with him, but I demurred. Day is going to come soon when it's going to be difficult to get lessons with him when Pro isn't available. Dang, again!)

Most interesting phenomenon has been how much better my some of my non-smooth dances have gotten just by repetition, and not all that much of it. We both noticed it first in swing. A couple of difficult segments of the swing got better as if by magic when we ran through it one day. My brain/body is either getting better at fixing things on the fly (you know, the way some of people operate all the time) or better at applying what I've learned in smooth to other situations. I'll take it in either case. The Bolero needed by far the most work, but has started to feel like a dance instead of me just going through the motions of something. The WCS has been a lot of fun, partially because I've gotten to teach NG what I know and show him a few variations. I said it before, but it is so nice that he does not get defensive but likes it when I suggest "improvements" to what we are doing. Or, at a minimum, he's a good actor. ;)

New(er) Guy did one of those miracle fixes today where something went from not acceptable to Oh My!! with one correction. I love it when that happens. :) NG gets real kudos for the work he has done with me while Pro has been out of the country. I am not the easiest person in the world to teach and he made some real improvements in my dancing.

Editorial aside: In case you don't believe me about not being the easiest person in the world to teach, when I first agreed to Pro's suggestion that I take some of my lessons with NG, he exclaimed, "Oh, good! If he can teach you, he can teach anybody!" (I have some very good qualities as a student, too, but I'm not joking when I say that I am proof that they can teach anybody to dance who's willing to stick with it and do the difficult work that learning dance entails.)

Lesson Sunday. Experimenting with different shoes for AT. Wasn't a train wreck. Semblance of a routine coming together. Feeling hopeful.

Me, too. I had just about nothing going for me when I started taking lessons. And I went through some difficult times that pro has marveled I stuck with it at all.

Rhythm lesson was good this week - more details were worked on. Routines next week to get the turns technique and other bits in my body. Latin was a bit of a struggle for the lesson, and then had a coaching, which was also a bit of a struggle. HOWEVER, the coaching was very helpful and made me become aware of a mental block i've got when doing latin. I'm more nervous than i realize to do it - internalizing a lot of external expectations. now that i'm aware of it i can work to overcome it.

So sports fans, I guess it's official. I'm dancing a couple of entries of bronze AT at OSB this year. I was having major angst about it until I received this text from a non dancing friend...

" Relax...So what if you do poorly..Not like your life will fall apart..No money on this competition..So, relax and have fun..Enjoy it even if u suck...Who cares!!! There are bigger things to worry about and doing well isn't even in the top 10...So, relax and let it flow!"

Puts the whole thing in perspective, doesn't it?

Purr,
Your friend captured part of my attitude about dancing at the October Harvest Moon in Chicago.

Of course, I do dream of winning big! But that's probably unrealistic. I have no idea what the competition will be like, but I know I'm not one of those naturally talented people who picks things up rapidly. (There are one or two of these at my studio. One did flying trapeze and other circus things before starting ballroom dance. She began dancing a year ago in July, and she was probably better than I am now last November!)

I want to make it as fun for me as possible. I bought a dress, beaded it myself (because I'm crafts-sy and like to do that sort of thing), I'm doing a bunch of dances. And who knows? But if I come in last in every event, I'll still have fun being there with my dancing friends. My life isn't going to end.

Oh gosh... I'm normally not a "dress up" sort of person. So, yeah.... I've got the fake eyelashes, makeup, press on nails, hair bun thingie, hair spray, other hair gizmos, foundation garments to smooth all the blub and so on. I hope I end up looking fabulous!! :)

My pro got a spray tan.. I actually like his very fair skin, green eyes and dark hair, but like everyone, he doesn't think his own looks are the "right" ones. He looks good with the light spray tan too.

Well.... practice pays off! I've been too nervous to discuss practice as we go along because I thought I might jinx myself!

I competed yesterday. I had tons of fun......and I did better than I dreamed on prizes!

It was really fun meeting some three friendly women-- all dancing newcomers rhythm-- in the dressing room (and one unfriendly one who may have just been way too nervous to chat with us. Later, I could see how extremely nervous she was dancing, which is a shame.)

One of the other newcomers who'd come down from Minnesota turned out to be *super awesome*. We were different age levels so we didn't compete with each other which was very lucky for me! But also, she and her teacher were so enthusiastic, and when I danced Mambo and Bolero which he did not, I could hear cheering from both sides of the floor, which meant it was just people from my studio. That really picked me up made be be able to have more fun and dance better! (It didn't occur to me when I was friendly in the dressing room, but being friendly in the dressing room pays off.)

I was in "Newcomer bronze 1" and "Newcomer bronze 2" for my age group (59). We had the first set of heat. I did 6 dances in each; the extra one was WCS. My heats were all packed between 1 and 14! I danced "blind"--no eyeglasses, which helps me dance better. (It's hard to move in close to the partner when you have bifocal eyes and the glasses are forcing youto look through the part that corrects for near sightedness. Your head just says "whoa! move back!!!!" ) No glasses has the side effect that I also can't be distracted by other dancers, audience or anything else. My teacher says my connection improved when I stopped wearing them-- which is what I thought too. It was an instant effect when I switch.

I put my eyeglasses on and watched the heats until prizes for the first session were announced. I got to see all the pretty dresses. Also I could see how SUPER awesome the woman from Minnesota was. And I could then see that the cheering from the side was from her studio. And when she and her teacher weren't performing, they were groovin' to the music. Just watching them enjoy was fun in and of itself!)

Prize were soon after that my heats. I either got a 1st or 2nd on 10 of them and a 3rd on another. (I honestly don't remember what I got for which dance. Lots of first in Newcomer bronze 1. ) Needless to say the woman from Minnesota did too! I think we became total fans of each other. (I'm hoping to see her at a future dance event!)

Then we watched lots of heats.... When we were waiting in line for our next heat, we chatted with the two from Minnesota. We grooved, sang to the music and on. It was a blast!

My teacher suggested going all out in "Best of the Best" for the three dance event-- which has lots of non-Newcomers in it. Also, the way that's scored, I was also up against the couple from Minnesotta who, while newcomer, were not only clearly better than I am, they were better than almost everyone in Bronze! I gave that a whirl but could tell I went out of control in cha-cha. Oh well. :(

I got back in control in Rhumba. My Swing I think went well. I got 5th, which certainly was better than I'd hoped considering how much I thought I'd messed up the Chacha. One of the men at my studio got 3rd in that. So that was great.

Three students an two teachers went out for drinks afterwards. The teacher (my pro and hubbies soon-to-be pro) are young, and the other student is young. So.... of course we picked up the tab :).

It was a blast. Now I'm tempted to compete in Indiana. :)

Ugh latin lesson was frustrating last night. I thought maybe removing what i thought were mental blockers would help a bit, but either that isn't the issue or i didn't get all those mental blocks removed. still too stiff in my upper body and not grounded enough. also, we're starting to finally get to full speed on the routines and i am not always keeping up. AND i bent my leg on my ronde in rumba which i KNOW i'm not supposed to do. le sigh.
one good spot? apparently, i am my pro's coach's revenge.:D Pro's coach always told pro that he'd have a student that was like himself. AND NOW HE HAS ONE.:vamp:
I thought i'd be ready with all 5 dances by december competition but now i am not so sure.

rhythm lessons went very well, though. working on tweaks, and then did a round to see how well they are incorporating. very pleased with the progress so far. we might add a little more cuban style to mambo but not sure if i have enough time before osb to make it look good.

I'm already addicted!!! I'm watching the pros Saturday too. I should hem a dress this afternoon, but if my struggling student meets earlier than normal (which he might if he gets his homework done), I'm sneaking out to watch more dancing this afternoon. (My 5 pm student moved to tomorrow.)

You won't recognize me because I'm way older than my photo. (I need a new one! Heh.) I don't know if you recognize studios-- I'll be at the table with the DeSarge group. (I haven't taken off my press on nails. Boy it's hard to type!)
