lessons after about a week break due to weather. solo practice helped keep me on track, and there is ACTUAL IMPROVEMENT IN MY STUPID SHOULDERS WOOHOO YAYAYAYAYYAY PARTY CHAMPAGNE NOW PLS. also, turns are getting there. i really need to continue to get the turns technique and useing the right muscles to lift my arms into my body more as a habit. worked on swing - adding more choreo to the end to make it longer (we kept repeating the routine in comps) and paso doble - choreo up to the first crash is done!

I've been trying out leading. I went to the beginner Rhumba class last night. Of course the thing beginner leads find hard are hard for me. But I also have to laugh at the "follower" things that I notice:
  • forgetting when the "first" half of the box starts. (Forward on left, not back on right.) So, I forget to ... well... that NOW is when I want to start the new step.
  • being accustomed to waiting for the man to close. So.. there we are two women not getting into closed position.
I don't think it's really going to take that long to adjust to these specific things... but I'd just be... ARGH!!!!

I totally understand! After 10 years of following, I have done very little leading. When I made a concerted effort to learn, it was like learning to dance all over again. Really made me appreciate our leads that much more!

Was in a bit of a rut until I started taking group classes in Standard a few weeks ago. Now I feel like my dancing has all around gotten way better (been doing strictly Latin pretty much since I started about 15 months ago). My frame feels less stiff and I've become way more aware of my core which is awesome. It also finally clicked in my brain what it feels like to activate my arm and connect it to my body without letting it stiffen.

My coach commented on how much easier it was to dance with me during both of our last two lessons and that she doesn't feel like she has to fight me through any figures which was really nice to hear as it came totally unprompted.

Good lessons in bolero and latin rumba this week. Really working on using breathing to help define and control movement. continuing to practice so that all the work on my upper back/shoulders and turns is actually visible on the floor.

My foxtrot felt good during yesterdays lesson! I didn't feel like I was Frankenstein's Monster clucking my feet around. Whooo hooooo!
(My first "smooth" competition will be Windy City. I'd concentrated my private lessons on rhythm, so I'm really happy the smooth is getting to feel good.)

First proper lesson in three weeks due to illness and family emergencies. Tango is starting to feel amazing, which probably means I'm due for some new technique to make it not amazing again.

New waltz routine is difficult -- why did I decide to focus on open work this year?

I am also improving on turns! Less falling out of them or underturning. Definitely making some steady progress.

Great! I'm dancing Friday, but I'm going to try to be there to watch everything. I might drag my 86 year old Mom there. (She lives in Libertyville, so it's really close.)

Whine alert Second consecutive lesson where FF spends a large chunk of time (re)teaching her pro their choreography, and explains some pieces he didn't get in detail (timing, alignments, his steps, etc.). I know I was off sick for a while, and have been restricted in what I can do when I have been in, but... seriously?

(Reminding is cool, especially if it's been a while or it's a recent change, but this has seriously felt like 'teach from scratch'. Yesterday he looked at me like he'd never seen one of my QS walls before.)

Maybe you need to start charging him for reminder lessons. :)
