how are your lessons going? thread II

rhythm lesson monday and latin lesson yesterday. rhythm was good - working on bits and pieces to clear up spots in my routines. Latin was with the studio drama-causing pro. He apparently got his crap together, and so that drama is done and he's made it clear he will be around for a while. lesson was still frustrating though, but i have to figure out if it's residual frustration on my part that is making me intolerant. coachings tonight tho for rhythm that i am super excited about!!

So, last week's Showcase lesson was a 180 turn around from the one I described above. Unfortunately, instructor was not there for this week's lesson - I gather there are a lot of personal issues. I'm just hoping we can make it to Showcase with the routine at this point.

Latin lesson with comp pro.... made it through 4 dances. I forgot that paso is harder than it looks.

Picked up a few extra lessons this week to makeup for missing due to illness. I am concerned that the routines won't be up to par before showcase. Granted, they're for future comps, but I don't want to present something that's not at least half-polished.

Am I being too much of a perfectionist? I know they will always be works in progress, but coming from a performance background, it feels weird to perform something not "done". Maybe I'm overthinking it.

so, the coachings were AMAZING. so so good. and i got to be all fangirl because the coach is one of my favorite dancers! Performed my latin rumba and while i made it through, i was tense and wobbly. i'm sure my shoulders were around my ears! dreading the video, but at least i did it, despite all the drama with the pro. Now to figure out if i will compete all 5 latin opens.

And yet another week of all showcase lessons. I have pretty much accepted that this is what I'm going to need. We started working to music, slowed down 20%. Both of the guys were out today so one of the women stepped in to help me. First, major kudos to her for learning the routine. She had helped New(er) Guy work out some of the details and once she knew this was going to happen, she paid attention to the few parts she didn't all ready know. The goal today was to help me be able to dance it by myself to music. When I had tried it alone, I was getting off time, but couldn't tell exactly where my errors were. She did a great job of identifying where I was going wrong and of helping me fix it. It a tango with a lot of syncopations. For example, there's one bit where the timing is 1/2, 1 1/2, 1/2, 1, 1, and then 2 beats (and that's not the hardest part). At any rate, you can imagine how helpful it was having somebody work through it with me. Part of what she had to do was to be supportive while I dealt with my panic over it all, and she did that extremely well, too. :)

We got through about 4/5 of it and one of the really good things that happened is that even if I muffed up one measure (or more) during that, I was able to pick it up again. Always a very important skill. ;)

Talked to pro... he didn't get the whole 5 year plan, but I told him the next step or two of it - namely, I want to start teaching part-time and work toward my amateur teaching exams - doing standard in short order, with latin as a future goal. (I've been low-key studying for them for about a year.) Seems generally supportive, but "[has] to talk to the other owners."

My response: "sure, think about it, and talk to them…. but this is where I want to go, and I need to know if I can do that here." I'm surprised at how not stressed I am about what might come back as a response, and about how well I slept last night.

This is either going to lead to things getting a whole lot better and me a whole lot happier... or to me leaving for someplace where I can pursue my goals.

I'm just hoping we can make it to Showcase with the routine at this point.

So close.... too many personal issues, so he had to resign and another instructor is taking over the routine - had our first lesson last week (mostly me teaching him the choreo). I probably should be having a fit, but the red flags were all over the place so in hindsight I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did at the studio. We'll make it work (thank you Tim Gunn). I'm also doing two other short performances with my other instructor there, just doing comp amalgamations (mainly because I refuse to spend a day at this event and all the preparation for only one performance).

^Props to the instructor that is stepping up!

(Not props for the departing instructor for not teaching it to new guy (or even taping his part in another location and sending the video) so you didn't have to... sometimes, you do just need to leave (and can't wait), but IMHO, you take care of your people when you do.)

Think of it as 'professional training' - random stuff often happens, and the best can adapt and still put out a great performance... with the audience none the wiser. You'll be great :)

Current lessons are great! I thought I'd made progress on smooth before the windy city competition (well... I had made progress... ) But really... things weren't so great in competition.

I still pulled on my partner too much, and sort of "reach" when I move instead of pushing (if this makes any sense.) The result is a certain amount of "wobble" and so on. So I told my pro that we need to focus on just technique for a few weeks. I don't want any patterns above Bronze II in the syllabus. Just things I can work on frame, footwork and so on without having to worry about anything else. I 'm doing this for rhythm and smooth.

I also decided that I need to visit my 88 year old mother once a month. She's fine which makes visiting never urgent-- but at the age where someone should stop in from time to time. (She has three kids who visits locally, so I won't be the only one seeing her. But I need to visit once a month come hell or high water!).

She happens to live in Libertyville and lives quite near a good dance studio. So to motivate myself for the somewhat long drive there ad back, I set up an extra lesson at studio in Libertyville. I had another reason, a former voice teacher had told me that voice department where she studied (Brigham Young) insisted students cycled through teachers and I figured having two with different personalities, and approaches could only help. I took a "technique only" session with in Libertyville and some here in Naperville. It's actually working great.

Interestingly, I chatted with one of the owners at the studio in Libertyville and told her my idea about more than one teacher. She said at their studio, they require students to have two teachers also. ( Her list of reasons included: (a) teachers can become partially blind to their own students fault-- the other one sees them, (b) students get so used to one teacher they don't really listen, (c) everyone does have some particular style and so on. I definitely have to cop a plea to (b). I'm guessing another reason might be that there are students who might want to say "I just want Don Johnson", and requiring two might fix that a little. I didn't request Don. I'd dropped in a group lesson and I knew I liked Dascha.)

So far, I've only done two teachers on rhythm, but I'm getting my feet together better, I'm actually (sometimes) getting all my weight on my leg before turning, I'm (sometimes) settling after I turn and so on. Now when my pro-teacher leads me, I can feel much more balanced. He's happy about it too!

It's very limited patterns and just fundamentals for through the next few weeks. If that means I do nothing Bronze II in our studio's upcoming medal test, so be it!

well, latin lessons are slowly improving. I decided to go back and do some closed latin work, especially in rumba, to get some more confidence in the foundation of my dancing. rhythm was a review of the excellent coaching last week. I have more latin lessons than rhythm until the next comp, to get me prepared, so i really need to get some time to practice on my own soon.

And, no surprise, another week of all showcase lessons. Pro came in during the end of a lesson with New(er) Guy today and he very pleased about how much more solid the routine is than when he last danced it with me, even at full speed. I realize that part of me wanted to show how well NG had done while Pro was gone part of this week, so instead of freaking out about doing it at full speed with a bunch of people watching, I gave it my all. I've admitted it before--odd things sometimes motivate me to do better than I normally would. There are still a few rough spots, of course, but all in all, I'm quite pleased with how it's coming along.

Snuck in 10-15 minutes of waltz today. ;) I had hit the point of diminishing returns with the showcase routine. We're now running it through at full speed and without counting it. Panic occasionally sets in without the count. Of course, if panic didn't set in, I wouldn't be having a problem with not counting it.... ("The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.") There are only two places where I get into trouble, and one doesn't matter much because the next section is in frame. The other one is an issue. It precedes a turn sequence that I can hit spot on 5 times in a row and then proceed to blow, oh, 3 times in a row. Stressing about exactly where I am in the music doesn't help. And finally, there's one part towards the end that I tend be slow on. At any rate, I decided I wasn't going to get any better today and asked for a switch for the last part of the lesson. Boy, was it nice to be doing something else!

performed my jive for the first time this weekend at a mini-showcase. a couple things were good, and saw a lot i need to work on to make it look better. overall, it was decent. good confidence boost for latin, however, which i sorely needed.
