Intro & ? about when you visit other cities....

This is funny...I'm kind of hesitant to post! :D
But I think this is still on topic... ;)

So, being a follow that is getting ready to jump into my new scene here in DC (which for some reason I'm REALLY nervous to do)...
I'm looking for some insight from you leaders on what kind of approach you all admire/appreciate from follows you've never seen or danced with before...

Also, what about you other follows. How do you feel about new follows(advanced/intermediate) trying to "break in" to your local scene?

I haven't really lived in a place that has had a "scene", so any dancing I've done has been while travelling. Which seems to be less intimidating to me.

I just want to make sure I take the right approach...I'm going out by myself and it's all just a little scary!! Thankfully I do have tj, beto and vin who are willing to make me feel a little less alone. Thanks again guys!

What? A topic in DF getting hi-jacked? This never happens! (and it's certainly fits anyway)

One of the best dances I've had here was from a stranger that I've never seen again! I guess she was just visiting. She just came up to me and asked me to dance. Simple and easy.

Another friend of mine gave me one of those "come hither" looks, when I was dancing, and later when I wasn't.

Others will just put out their hand when I walk up to them.

So if you're comfortable enough to ask, then you should.

I have a theory that we guys tend to notice who is dancing with whom, and that if a gal is dancing with so-and-so, then she's likely to dance with you.

It's mostly a matter of being recognized/remembered as someone who you like to dance with. Which is why we tend to have so much discussion about dancing with strangers, etc.

Do you think most leaders like to be asked?

And those that consider themselves "advanced" leads who never seem to have a chance to rest....How do you like being asked to dance (possibly to your favorite song :D ) by a stranger who you haven't really seen dance yet?

In my opinion, yes.

The local "celebrities" who dance all the time - I've never heard of them turning down any strangers who ask. If nothing else, it's bad for business as most of them teach, too.

If anything, you might have to wait in line, however... they *are* popular after all.

Good point.

I'm not one to "wait in line"...which is why I've always hesitated to ask the more advanced dancers. I just think..they'll see me dance and will come ask me!! **wishful thinking**

Oh that happens all the time, too. I'm just saying that if it *doesn't* happen to you, that you shouldn't take it personally. That they might just not notice you because they're busy with folks they already know.

If you stand in the right place at the right time, it's pretty easy to get asked. But you may or may not be asked by the local celebs, first, as someone else may beat them to you. (and if they see you turning too many guys down, then they might not ask you either.)

The best compliment I can ever recieved is getting asked to dance by a salsera, especially if she is an awesome dancer.

honestly alot of people more entrenched in the dance scene might not notice you. I myself have gotten pretty bad about that. Now I stick mostly with people I know.

My other attempt was when I was in Denver last July. That is actually how I found the board. I found a thread where someone had posted about where to go salsa dancing in Denver. It mentioned a place called the Blue Ice. I confirmed that it was "The" place to go with a local salsa instructor. It was awesome. They had a live band that night and the place was very lively. Lots of different types of people, but everyone was very cool and seemed classy. I didn't even spot a bouncer. Lots of good dancers. I eventually met a really cute blonde who had only danced a little swing before. I spent the rest of the evening teaching her salsa, merengue and a little cha cha. I had a blast and stayed until they closed. I definitely plan to go there again when I'm going through Denver on my way to Copper Mountain for skiing next month.
We rock here in Denver don't we!! 8) Tell him tj  I'm glad you enjoyed your swing through our little salsa universe here. And hopefully it was one of my threads on Denver clubs that helped.

I do a lot of traveling and in my 2 1/2 years of dancing I've met a lot of salseros from around the country. This has made me privy to some of the best spots wherever I visit. I love it! Nothing like being the visiting salsero that, once you show your stuff, everyone wants to dance with!! :D

Yeah, I actually think it was. You could of even been there I guess. I loved the live band. We even got a dance toward the end with the floor pretty much to ourselves. It was great. I'm looking forward to getting back out there soon. Thanks for posting the info :D .

Hi Kindra,
I can only speak for myself, but I like it when girls ask me to dance. I dance with girls that have never "partner danced" all the time. I will almost always dance with someone the first time they ask me, mostly because I don't like being turned down without being given a chance myself. The only time it would bother me is if a girl I didn't enjoy dancing with kept asking me over and over. I'd say ask a guy no more than 2 or 3 times and if he doesn't ask you after that then move on.
Where I am from, girls have it pretty easy. They just have to come to the club and they will get asked to dance. If you stand up and move to the music a little, a line will form. There are always way more guys then girls. Not all the guys can dance mind you, but enough can that you would get to dance with a good one at least every 2 to 3 guys.

Odds are I was there. I pretty much lived in that joint this past summer!

Is it not the place to go anymore? I'm going to be in Denver over a Friday and Saturday next month. I also tried a place called La Rhumba. Was very crowded though, maybe I should have gotten there earlier.

Blue Ice is still good on Fridays . . . I actually don't know anywhere to go around here on Saturdays (youngsta, if you do then fill me in!). If you're ever here on a Sunday, come visit us at D-Note. :)

Welcome out of lurk mode, CierreByB :D !

I love checking out salsa scenes around the world....! When out of comfort zone, we tend to be open to (learning) opportunities we might have otherwise missed 8) !

Here's my old thread on this topic: http://www.dance-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=2118

* t'was a good topic 'til it got hi-jacked   *

My local scene is follower-heavy, so guys have it pretty easy & we girls have to actively ask (the saying goes: "You don't ask, you don't dance.")!

So when I was in the States doing my usual round, a few local girls were like    when they saw what I was doing. (" You ask guys...????") Most of the guys were like: "Wow :o ! You are asking me.....? YES!" with a few exceptions.

It's still going on Fridays, but it's more of a LaRumba crowd now meaning many of the dancers don't really go there anymore. It's a roll of the dice.
