Latindancers and diet before a competition...

I diet before comps.. It usually starts about a mont before a comp... I just try to lean up. Those costumes show no mercy.

Wow I have never dieted before comps.... if anything I eat more.. habit from swimming, I guess.

The week before a big competition (or when I swam, a swim meet) I try to eat a lot of carbs because, though your body burns it off slower, they provide you with long term energy. Then day of comp I am usually too nervous to eat a huge meal so I eat power bars, fruit, and luna bars throughout the day to keep my energy levels up. Usually by the end of the competition I am starving and eat a football player sized dinner LOL.

But, I have never had weight problems. I generally stay the same weight without much effort but I do have to make sure I give my body enough nutrition before a comp or I have the problem I had at BADC last year where I almost fainted before the final and my partner was basically carrying me around the floor.. not sexy.

hahaha I don't know why i laughed so much at that..but it's so true. One of my dresses is open all down the sides pretty much!

Wouldn't dieting right before a comp sort of throw you off your weight? I lost weight one time when I kept forgetting to bring lunch to school, and I wandered around crashing into doorframes until I got used to it.

I try to eat well all the time...but I'd be lying if I said the prospect of putting on my latin costume doesn't add extra incentive to be particularly good. ;)

I think the important thing for us as dancers is that we be sensitive to our bodies' needs. For some slimming down might help increase energy from less mass to move around; for others (like me) making sure I have enough fuel is the key to having enough energy to dance. On competition day I have to make sure I eat plenty of both protein and carbs or I'll feel faint 30 seconds into my first round. Breakfast = steak and eggs and home fries!

Agreed!

The week or so before comp I do try to drink more water (and less soda). That dehydrated feeling mid-round as you are sweating under the bright lights isn't fun. While I try to be extra good leading up to a comp I also fall into the category of needing to be careful of what I eat year round in order to fit into my dresses!

I'll never be small, but photos and videos from competitions are serious motivation to try and stay toned. Not to mention the price of a new Rhythm dress....

I will lose a couple pounds before a competition (not on purpose). It just happens from the extra practices. I normally have a pretty clean diet but about a month before competition I'll cut my alcohol and dessert consumption way down. During a competition I'll down carbs like nobodys business, at dinner you'll see me eating as many potatoes and as much bread as I can find.

 I never have desserts, but the thought of not having wine available around comp time is simply unacceptable:nope:...I am afraid I would not get to sleep AT ALL:-?
