Loving my new phone!

I've been reading this thread with interest. We have an old grandfathered plan with T-Mobile that carried over from the Powertel days. It was fine back when we had flip phones and only made one or two calls a week. But now I'm trying to get with the decade, but I don't want to pay $100 a month for a data plan. I was looking at Verizon, but I've been seeing reports of poor customer service (not just here) and that's discouraging.

My big thing is trying to decide between a pocket-sized phone or something larger. The problem with a pocket-sized phone is that my eyes aren't what they once were, plus I hate trying to type on a small phone surface. The problem with larger phones and tablets for a guy is... if it doesn't fit in your pocket, how do you carry it?

I'm also not sure what OS I'm interested in. I'm kind of leaning towards an Android phone. However, the other day, my brother was showing me the latest incarnation of Windows 8 with the Metro interface, and it looks a lot slicker than it used to be. Not sure I'm interested in iOS because of how eager Apple seems to be to lock up the platform. I want to develop my own apps, and I know I can get the Android tools, although the OS itself is kind of weird.

One possibility that may work for you: get an Android phone with your old phone plan and use a hotspot for your data. Connect the Android phone via WiFi to the hotspot.

Typing is a separate issue. I don't like the touch screen typing, even on a larger screen. Maybe a portable Bluetooth keyboard.

I have had nothing but excellent experiences with Verizon customer service. I had a slight issue when I was transferred over from the unlimited plan (I was grandfathered in for a contract or two but last time I upgraded was forced to switch) and they prorated my data strangely. I called to say it seemed wrong I was about to be charged an overage fee when I hadn't even used 2 GB (my new allotment) in the entire month (I had about a week to go). Without missing a beat the customer service lady on the line offered me a 6 GB special at the exact same price. I have been very pleased with all my dealings with verizon so far.

For a long time, pre-paid phones were associated with poor folks like myself who couldn't swing a contract, but now, many of us are switching over to things like Straight Talk, because of the unlimited data. If you like Verizon's coverage, get a CDMA phone and port your number, or just sign up anew with straight talk, and you'll still be on their towers.

Straight Talk's data isn't really unlimited. Once you hit their data cap of 3 GB, your data rate plummets for the rest of the billing month. 3 GB is plenty for occasional email and Facebook use. I did have an errant app go crazy and use up my bandwidth in a single day once. Since then I keep track of data use with Android's monitor, and turn off background data while on the phone network.

If you are a heavy data user, there really is no ceiling on how much you will have to pay with Verizon.

I fit the big 6" screen Nexus 6 in my pocket just fine. If I had to choose again, I would probably get the Note 4 which is 5.7" (wife got this one).

I just bought the note 4....am liking it as much as a person can when they still don't exactly know how to use it...the current annoynce is that the keyboard comes up right in front of the area where the text that I am trying to type is supposed to show up... so I can't see how badly I am bungling it up until I hit send b/c I can't figure out how to move either thing or if it is even possible...if it isn't possible...well.. that will bite....but I am assumng that I am simply lacking some obvious piece of information

while it won't fit in the thing that I call a purse, I think I am still less likely to lose it...which is my specialty...plus, I only carry a purse when I have to...it is usually a dance bag or a gym bag

I just picked the droid turbo over the nexus 6. I really liked both phones... but the battery life on the turbo is really what sold me. Otherwise the same specs, and the turbo is just a smaller phone which I don't mind.

Of course, I had unlimited from AT&T once, and the dorkholes texted me that I was nearing a data threshold at 5 gig once. That was when I started looking around and found T-Mobile.
