New developments, trends over the last decade?

Seems to me that, here in Brussels, the main development in recent years is the drastic fall in the number of tangueros and tangueras. This is of course a consequence of the pandemic. I deduct that simply from the fact that the milongas are much less packed than before the pandemic. I also have the impression that there are fewer milongas, but I am less sure about that.

Yesterday I was at a "silent milonga", that was something new for me. Showed me how many judgments one makes and how many superfluous words one speaks.

What exactly is a "silent" milonga?

So the poor men have to stand and walk around? I think I'd prefer having my own color-coded seating section.

Here, we have a lot of milongas but not as many dancers as before. Seems like a lot of people never returned to tango.

There were.

A quick Google gives this and this. I cannot vouch for the veracity; other sources are available. There also used to be German tango with music from orchestras in Berlin. Interrupted by WW2.

I see the same in the UK. Many milongas, even new ones in competition with older venues, but because of a rush to 'get back to normal' and 'it's all over because we're not testing and there are no longer media reports', some think it's all over; others are still reticent due to their perceived risk. It's true that some haven't returned, but others will not visit a milonga with partner changing yet.

Sounds just a little sexist and non-PC - back to the 1950s at least. What about female leaders or male followers?

A matter of taste. It was a quite popular and well-attended event.
