NJ Dancesport Summer Sizzler?

I would like to second that the organizers(esp. Mario) are exceptionally friendly! The studio is beautiful(but the floor may be a smidgen small for a comp). I would definitely try to make this comp in the future.

Rz, are these the videos? ...

Thanks tunape, that's about right ( funny it won't even allow me to quote your message in its entirety)

on youtube.com, if one searches with "summer sizzler ballroom",

it should get all the video clips.

One think I thought the organizers did not think through was the numbering system. It seems that they grouped couple numbers by events. In addition, when splitting into heats they did so by numbers. The result was that the first round of champ had a heat that was mostly pre-champ couples and a heat that was mostly champ couples. That must have made it harder on the judges. It also took from the experience of pre-champ couples because they only got to dance with only a few champ couples on the floor.
numbering was done based on when couples registered.. most pre champ couples registered online early and were lumped together...

I think you have to post a certain number of messages before you can send links. This prevents spammers from advertising their links and what not.

Anyhow, I'm a big fan of you and Snejana and Jennifer. :)

And I absolutely agree about the friendly organizers! They're always great. :)

I agree the floor was a bit on the slow side, but generally pretty good. A bit small, but that was expected. It would have been nice had they made use of the screen that was set up for recalls.

But in general, this was a great comp, as always. Love having the practice floor with the sound piped in, love having the marks posted pretty promptly on the wall. It's a bit crowded, but I don't see how a studio comp could be anything but and still have a good turnout.

All in all, I'm a big fan of this comp series, and I appreciate that we have them!

Rz,

I agree. I think Craig is the best male am dancer in the US and their placement is shocking. I too thought immediately of the OSB result they had a few years ago. I would be interested to see the marks to see which judges disliked them so much. I mean to be 4th, some of the judges had to have marked them as low as last in that final and that is jsut incredible to me. While by no means should they have beaten Egor and Katya (and maybe not Pasha and Inna because they danced better), I am not sure how they ended up behind Radek/Paulina.

Again, I didn't see the final, but the quality of the dancing in the semis, which I did see (and I watched all the couple who made the finals in the semis) was not consistent with the ultimate result. I'd love to hear more comments from those who did see the final on why this happened.

I now understand some of the previous statements on this board about couples being very picky about the judging panels at comps they attend - they really cannot afford a result such as this one... It's pretty damaging to say the least.

Oh yes, and thank you to the organizers - both Mario and Wendi are just great! And Wendi looked gorgeous:) The floor was a bit small but it was overall a great comp!

Ithink,
I wouldn't venture too far to say who's the best male amateur dancer in standard in US now, Egor and Craig certainly found their match, they all have their fair shares of win and loss when they competed again each other.

Well, obviously it is my opinion of who's the best and opinions are always just that. I think it's OK for me to state it, no?

Fair enough:)

Since you watched the final, what were your impressions of the dancing, the placements, and who was left out of it?

I pretty much stated my opinion about the final in my first post here (msg #84 of this thread). Didn't watch other finalists dancing that much except my two favorite couples which is why i'm eager to see if anyone could post some video clips for the final.

It seemed like their movement had bigness without their usual fullness, they looked a bit tense (because of Katya's injury?). From what I saw, they had much less flashy choreography than the other couples, so I think any tension they had really showed, it couldn't be hidden by speed and showy moves. And maybe the judges preferred the style of the other couples?

To me Egor and Katya looked a level above all other couples in that final. Musicality, continuity and softness of movement and consistent stretch are the characteristics that in my opinion they had better than anyone else.

whether you prefer one couple's style or another and like one couple or another is one thing. But the characteristics above are pretty objective in my opinion regardless of style.

as to Craig and Katya, they didn't look to me like they were pushing and trying as hard as the other couples. Have to add though that making it look easy is a part of their unique style.

Kat, I dont' know about your registering early theory. We registered very late and were grouped with the same prechamp couples everywhere. I know for sure that I registered after most champ couples.
another theory would be alphabetical order. your and my numbers I think were consecutive, which would make sense given our partner's last names.

You're right, just realized the #s werent the ones given to couples by the registration system.. hm...

The numbers were definitely by event. However, I don't know how the event order was chosen. My quick guess would be running down the event registration list because champ smooth was listed before pre-champ standard and I know couples in champ smooth were given numbers according to champ smooth instead of pre-champ standard or champ standard.

For the (almost) full standard results, go here:

dancesportinfo.net/DisplayResults.aspx?EventID=12593

I believe there were 22 couples dancing. I count 21 there. I don't know what happened to Elona and me. We're not listed, but I do recall dancing. If that was an hallucination I need some help. ;)

As for the smooth results:

1. Hal & Emi
2. Christopher & Elona (lost on a rule 11 :( )
3. Greg & Kitty
4. Drew & Alicia
5. Kyle & Christy

Still trying to locate the shoes. My son came home with a pair of what appear to be Italian standard shoes that he can't fit into. Someone went home with his SupaDance shoes. No money for new shoes before nationals and his practice shoes look like crap.:headwall:
That's why you ALWAYS have a pair of new shoes in reserve.
