So I'm watching some karate championships on ESPN... and but for the uniforms and the weapons and to-be-broken objects, this looks just like cheerleading/dance/gymnastics routines. Music and everything. Team members running around getting into position for the various stunts (just like cheerleading). Synchronized weapons right now.

I find it interesting (not sure if good or bad, maybe both) how much all these various sports/arts/genres are mushing together.

One of the solo weapons performances was done to "Uptown Funk"... because that seems like a fitting tune to put one in a fighting mood. Oh, and plenty of flips and other acrobatics in these routines.

Real martial artists HATE that stuff.

I don't doubt it... I practiced Tae Kwon Do for 4 years at a school owned by a very traditional 8th dan black belt born in Korea. There was lots of choreography ("forms") but definitely no music.

When I used to train at TKD I asked my Master to help me make a forms-poomsae routine to music. He said no.

I think I may be repeating a story here, but a couple years ago, instructor and I were practicing a routine that included a hip hop section I had choreographed. Another instructor (whom I had known previously as a fellow student at my TKD school, we just happened to cross paths again, this time in ballroom) watching from afar told me later he thought I was doing some TKD form. So apparently my hip hop looks like martial arts.

I went to the WDSF website and looked up the presidium's members and tried to Google some of them, but I haven't found anything to disprove that. Could you provide some links please?

For one, I know that Shawn Tay (the General Secretary), together with his wife Gladys, were once competitive latin dancers who represented Singapore. At present, the couple has a dance academy in Singapore (Shawn & Gladys Dance Academy).

No one wants to watch a couple walk around the floor doing the same boring routine they used in the multi-dance events when you came for a show dance. This is why unless you get pairs that think outside the box like Julia and Igor did Standard show dances can be very boring indeed. (And this was Smooth, which needs to be even less uptight. Actually I think she could have been sharper just for *tango* before the martial-arts theme comes in.)
