... LOVED Emanuel and Joanna's showdance - best performance of Saturday night, IMO. They brought the house down. I wish I saw Max and Yulia's show because it looked awesome when they were practicing it in the practice room. Unfortunately, I had to leave early because I was dancing the next morning... And, finding out the Pro Latin results the next morning, I cannot believe any judge would Elena Kryuchkova over Yulia - Yulia is probably the best female latin dancer I have ever seen and I've seen Beata, Karina and Carmen dance live... She's unbelievably good!...

Here are some pictures from Emanuel and Joanna's showdance. It WAS very good.

I didn't take pictures of Max and Yulia's dance because when they're on the floor I don't want to be doing anything else. I just watch.
But Max didn't seem distracted at all after the event, at least not to me. A bit drunk and jolly, may be, but that was in the wee hours at the bar :p But he does have a habit of running away from the floor after he's done dancing. I've seen him do that at Miami and other places. Let's see if someone can let him know he needs to show reverence to the powers that be!! :notworth:

very interesting to hear that perspective, larinda - thanks. someone told me a showdance they saw was pretty much a standard competition routine - i was astounded at this. does anyone really think they can do that and win?

But if they went into it not realizing they might have to do a showdance then they don't have much choice, right? Not very much time to prepare something more ...

I think the 6th place couple (the one that basically did their routine for their showdance) had no idea they'd be in the finals. It might have been a surprise and at that point, there is no way you can have a show prepared on the same day for the evening...

Come to think of it, for their "show dance", even Val and Valeria jsut did they competition routine as part of their Balckpool under 21 winner dance... It's surprising that they don't have a show number. Eugene and Maria did a show paso which wasn't their routine. It was weird (he wore a cape that turned into a skirt:-/) but it was still a show number...

Yulia is good but so is Andre. Maybe Yulia should dance with Andre and Max should dance with Elena. Brian and Carmen are not equal either but their partnership is amazing

I think this question of who should have won the Latin division may generate as much controversy as one that plagued the OSB a few years back (for those who remember). I also think the wise thing to do is to wait until the program airs, and people will be able to judge for themselves. Otherwise, this conversation may degenerate into barely masked personal digs by old/new posters using new identities.
Let's just wait for everyone else to see the dancing and compare it. There is no question that both couples are highly qualified, and people may disagree on which one they like better.

SOME OHIO STAR BALL THOUGHTS:
This is a wonderful competition! I haven't been since 2001, and I really missed it!

The thing that really stood out in my mind about Saturday night at this year's OSB was how many showdances and special exhibitions there were. All four disciplines had showdance events. (I believe I am correct in saying that back in 1998-2001, only the international events had separate showdance competitions.) There were also 4 world pro-am exhibitions, and exhibitions by the winners of amateur latin (Eugene and Maria), international standard (Alexander and Larissa), all the junior standard winners, world youth international latin under 21 (Val and Val), two professional theatrical numbers, all the junior latin winners, the junior 10 dance champions (Roman and Chrystyne), and the adult amateur 10 dance champions (Nikolai and Karina). Oh, and one by the Barton sisters. There were also short, joint honor dances for the top 3 finishers in each division that competed Saturday night. Total number of showdances, exhibitions, and honor dances, by my calculation: 43.

Some of these numbers were terrific, especially Emmanuel and Joanna's "Shimmy with You" number, which won the rhythm showdance, and Max and Yulia's "The Rhythm Section" number, which won the latin showdance.

Between the huge number of show dances and the time taken to tape the introductions and endings of the TV specials, the program ran somewhat behind schedule. (In contrast, the afternoon session with all the amateur latin events other than the final of am championship latin was running about 20 minutes ahead of schedule much of the time!) The comp was scheduled to end at 12:26 AM. I left at 12:57 AM, and they were just starting the "America's Best" Competition. The audience started to thin a bit after international latin (scheduled to start at 10:55, actually started around 11:27), and a bit more after the american smooth showdances (scheduled to start at 11:09, actually started around 11:40), and continued to thin at a pretty steady basis after each event thereafter.) It was too bad, because there were so many quality performances, but I think people were exhausted. (I can't even imagine how tired people who danced pre-bronze latin first thing that morning must have been!)

The Battelle Hall was reasonably full, but it wasn't packed to the gills. There were even some second row floor seats that had no doubt been sold, but which stayed empty the whole night. The crowd was enthusiastic, but not as loud and energized as I remember it being some other years. (Then again, at least one other year, we were somehow seated in the midst of the Michael and Toni cheering section, and they were some of the loudest people on the face of the planet.)

The music also seemed a little quiet to me, but maybe I'm losing my hearing after going to so many comps where the music is blasting! ;)

I thought the two most exciting contests were Professional Latin and Amateur Latin, in that order. I was on tenterhooks the whole time about professional latin, and both of the top 2 performed so well that either could have won. LOVED IT!

The results for the top 3 couples were broken down by dance for American Rhythm and International Standard, but not for American Smooth, Amateur International Latin, or Professional International Latin. I would have loved to have heard the full results in the latin.

Nick and Lena announced their retirement in order to focus on their business.

Saturday night was wonderful, despite the lateness...but for me, the highlight of the comp was definitely watching 3 rounds of amateur latin that afternoon. There is SOOOOOO much depth in the latin field right now, and I actually think there are 9 or 10 couples that could easily have been in the final. I'm hoping to get to see a lot of these couples again at the MAC!

:) ChaChaMama

So was anything said about who the pros would be for Season 2 of "Dancing with the Stars?" Someone said on one of those threads that an announcement would be made around the time of Ohio..sooo?

I heard that Nick would be one (obvious choice, since he danced on the "Dance Off" show), and with him and Lena retiring that gives him the time to do it, as well as supervise the costuming for the show...????

Nick and Lena are apparently coming to the Massabda dance camp in February, along with Darren Bennett and Lilya (sp?). I think I may need to make this trip (although one hates to plan a trip with New England weather being what it is in the winter).

Please, let Nick and Lena do the costumes for season 2. Some of those costumes from the first season, ugh!

I have to say I am totally bummed they are retiring from competing. Although, it does leave more time for them to coach. I've been wanting to get down to NYC to visit a friend and stop in to their studio for a lesson, or three. Roadtrip!
