pre-competition disorder

Guess this is getting real, folks. Just had a what-in-the-double hockey sticks-did-I-get-myself-into moment. And why did I think I was good enough in AT to enter the biggest dance sport competition in the US, having not competed for over 3 plus years??!! Catch a breath, here.

If it helps, I was told recently that Ballroom Beach Bash is largest Pro/Am competition at the moment. ;)

Also, if it helps, you can think of it like the just-run NYC marathon. There's a lot to be gained by doing it even if you don't expect to be in the top 5 and you give it your best in any case.

Has OSB lost its prestige a bit? I thought it was still an important comp.

It is a very important comp, just not the absolute largest at the moment--assuming the person who told me that is correct. Note my other posts--I planned the end of this year and all of next year to help me wrap my head around competing there in 2019. :D

Ah, i get it. GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR lol

It will be ok. After all, it's only dancing. A couple of things to keep in mind:

- Have good posture. And related....
- Hold yourself up. Pro is not responsible for your balance.
- Move your own (self). Pro is not responsible for carting your (self) across the floor. Which brings us to...
- Use your legs.
- Partner. Ballroom dancing isn't a solo sport.
-Feel it, the music, the character of the dance, whatever it is.
- And have fun!

Don’t have any competitions planned now, the last one went wrong on so many levels, almost broke up with my pro and both said things we regret now. We agreed to get it going and try one more, but the subject hasn’t come up yet. I started taking practicing by myself more seriously and he compliments me a lot, but I feel we both understand our next competition may be our last one. Don’t know if qualifies as a pre-competition disorder, but I start missing competing and that uneasy feeling is present even though I have no idea when is my next competition. I must be crazy wanting to do it again, but that’s why it’s a disorder ;)

I'll be there but sleeping in :D - cheering you on in my dreams! we should meet up.

I'll be around through early afternoon, I expect. It's cold here - frost on the ground this morning - so expect low temperatures and precipitation, either rain or rain/snow mix. We also had wind earlier in the week.

An article about OSB appears in yesterday's paper, with a big photo of dancers on the comp floor. Family member showed it to me and said, you're not competing in that, are you? The conversation went downhill from there.

I'm on leave for a couple of days next week. Catch you on the flip side.

Don’t worry! Are you talking Argentine tango? Those heats are often uncontested or maybe a couple of competitors so don’t think of it as the biggest comp in the country for AT. The extra club dances are usually lighter at Ohio because everyone is mostly focused on the scholarship

I know you are right. I've looked at other competitions, and I've seen AT paired with club dances or rhythm dances. Here it's paired with smooth dances, which is a little surprising to me. Dancing in a long dress doesn't bode well for AT - too much of a hazard getting your feel caught in your dress.

All family member sees is the photo in the paper, of all the thin women in their fancy dresses who look elegant in closed hold. Then family member looks at me and sees a middle aged heavy woman who's had back and sciatic nerve issues, and wonders what kind of pipe dream is this.

I'm starting to realize that I'm in way over my head going to OSB. I'm going to focus on just dancing as best I can and do what I know. Goals include (1) not worrying about what other people are doing, and (2) being a gracious non-winner.

Family member needs to be slapped upside the head. ;) I am also a middle aged heavy woman with a myriad of physical issues. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, I will be at OSB next year and I'm planning on enjoying myself and dancing well for wherever I am in my dancing journey.
