Pro/am Requirement to Dance Heats to do Championships

I was just wondering what is the reasoning for this other than comp organizer once more money. An amateur and professional events so far as I know there is no requirement to dance additional heat if you want to compete in the scholarship or championship events. Is this rule not just something that makes it harder for people with less money to compete? And even people with money might be more hesitant to compete if the cost is higher?

Let's say you just wanted to try out competing with a pro in the multi dance event. If it only cost $100 or so that would be easy. But instead it cost quite a bit more just a try. Obviously an amateur events it is much easier to start out casually competing for fun.

I don't think I've had to dance more than 10 single dance events to be able to do a scholarship. I don't mind; I recognize that ballroom isn't going to pay for itself! And I've never competed with more than 15 heats in addition to any challenges or scholarships. It's one of the ways I keep my pro-am costs as low as I am able.

I use the two rounds of single as a warmup. Don't want to dance for the money with out trying out the floor working out floor craft and getting my pro good and warm

I see the merit of requiring one set of singles....but I think two is getting rather obviously greedy and I think that the championship ought to suffice as a set of singles leading up to a scholarship as well....because, while I can afford to do more ...and prefer two sets before a scholarship....my standard isn't everyone else's

True but some top competitors don't dance the championship in addition. I always do. If I'm gonna go I wanna dance as much as I can. Being open gold has its limitations in that way

I haven't noticed or seen, at least in the comps I have done and will do on the horizon, a requirement for two sets, and i agree with Fas on all points. Although my last comp, my pro signed me up for a 3rd round of singles without so much of a word of warning, this was not my norm and others factors really ticked me off as I only wanted to do 2 rounds then scholarship. That said, I have several good friends who are am/am couples and they have recently been discussing this very issue with great intensity.

One is sensible--otherwise, the 'top' people would swing in, pick off the mulit-dance scholarships (I've never seen a requirement for the fairly-meaningless "championships", aka "option for pro with two ladies the same age/level who want to do a multidance"), which not only discourages the other people from even paying extra but costs the organizer all round. As long as the time difference between the multi-dance and single heats isn't TOO absurd (I like an evening scholarship as much as anyone but if my single heats were at 6:15 am this better be Columbus and it better be November) it's a fair compromise.

Demanding TWO rounds is greedy, not to mention if a pro has, say, Rhythm students in LA, LB, Bronze, Silver, Open, etc. you're putting a TON of wear and tear on him and while sure, he's getting paid, that takes a toll.

And 3wishes, I would have told your pro either we are doing the TWO rounds I want to do or HE is paying for the extra because I didn't agree to it. I'm only half teasing (because he's just kidding, mostly) when B. says why don't we do a round of Peabody at a comp and I say if he pays for it, sure.

It's typically one set per scholarship. Some events have more than one scholarship. Which I love btw

Typically, yes, but some comps are starting to require two. Which suggests they're either getting greedy, or they're not making enough with just one round/scholarship to cover the cost of the scholarship any more. (Which has the danger of turning into a viscous cycle--the more you have to dance, the more expensive it gets, the more people drop out, the higher they have to raise prices to spread it among fewer people....)

I would love to know an example of a competition that is requiring two rounds. Sounds like a price increase to me.

Also, if you win the scholarship, but then subtract the cost of entering (but not money paid to pro), what kind of numbers are we talking about?

Well, First Coast requires eight entries per scholarship, so I suppose it's only two full sets for smooth. But it's the one I was thinking of.

(I'll note that I've heard nothing but good things about the event itself. I don't *really* mean to criticize it - even if I don't think it's a competition for me.)

But if you dance the dancesport series championship it counts toward the world pro am masters scholarship. So one round of singles the and the dancesport series championship will do it. FYI

La Classique now requires two sets of singles to be scholarship eligible, and I believe Dancesport Montreal does as well.

It's definitely a thing.
